They really don't believe that Democrats are real Americans. They despise us. It truly is just that simple; well, not quite, there is also the subset of them that is just plain racist and can't bear the fact that we have an African American president. The vileness of the current Republican party just has no end.

Over a year is too long.

The Senate doesn't have to accept his pick, but he does have to nominate someone, and the Senate has to consider the nominee. They don't always succeed on the first pick - the failure rate is close to one out of five. But the process has to be completed.
