Taney memorials in three cities targeted for removal (MD)

... The fifth chief justice of the United States is best known for writing the court’s opinion in the landmark 1857 Dred Scott decision, which prevented African-Americans from suing federal court on the grounds that they had no rights as American citizens.

Discussion of Maryland's Taney tributes kicked off in June, when Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake created a seven-member task force to decide what to do with the city's four Confederate-era monuments, including a tribute to Taney in Mount Vernon Place.

On the heels of the task force came Frederick Alderwoman Donna Kuzemchak's proposal to remove the bronze bust of Taney from outside Frederick City Hall.

A Taney statue on State House grounds in Annapolis also faces the prospect of removal, through a pair of bills filed this month in the House of Delegates and Senate ...
