Republican Dwight D Eisenhower used a recess appointment to put William Brennan on the Supreme Court. Remember how controversial Obama naming a lower court judge as a recess appointment was, but here was a Supreme being named as a recess appointment.
Now, Brennan became one of the great liberals in SCotUS history and was there for 30+ years, but he was recess appointed by a Republican president.
(Another justice passed away, I think, right after Ike won reelection, and then Ike got the new justice and Brennan officially confirmed in March of 2017)

(56,828 posts)He was officially confirmed in March of 1957. He was seated on the court October 15, 1956 with the recess appointment.
As with all recess appointments - he serves until the next term of the senate, and then is either withdrawn or must be confirmed by the senate.
