"Why vote. The Supreme Court decided our vote does not count."

As said at my dinner table today by an evangelical Christian bigot who's still all hot and bothered over gay marriage. It was not in reference to Scalia passing away. We didn't know yet. And no she was not invited to my house for dinner. She was the guest of someone who was and I am gracious.

The reason I am posting this is because Scalia has passed and an opportunity has come. One of the things we depend on the Supreme court for is to be an independent backstop against which our basic human and civil rights cannot be legislated away Some things are not up to majority rule. I don't care how many evangelicals want to show up at the polls and vote to deny another human being basic rights. It's not their decision to make to start with.

We need justices who have taken this to heart along with all the educational bits of precedent and Constitutional Law. No Republican will give this to us. Obama has proven he will.

And may Scalia rest in peace. I honestly feel bad for any human being who goes to the grave with that much darkness in them.

in 2000, I understand the sentiment...but it doesn't sound like it was what that women meant.
