How many Supreme Court Justices have died a year before an Presidential Election?

Retiring Justices generally wait until the election is over before leaving or even announcing to avoid any political ramifications.

The repubicans seem to think that there is no precedence over the last 80 years, but the real issue is that this has never happened.

In this case there may well be ramifications if there are only eight justices for the next year. This may well be uncharted territory.
