Here's the 'early' story I saw and posted: http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/2016/02/supreme-court-justice-antonin-scalia-reported-dead.html/

'When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.'

A good friend and colleague went into a coma in a DC hotel. He was taken to hospital but was brain dead until they got his sister to fly from England days after to pull the plug.

<snip>
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

when he didn't show for breakfast they went and found him. Not being a Catholic I have no idea what the protocols are on giving last rites to someone already dead.

Combine those and even just the apnea can carry you off some time in the night.

Since Vatican II (IIRC) priests can give something very similar to last rites to "recently" deceased remains (with no specific definition of "recently", or "remains" for that matter -- this was important for a Columbia astronaut's family I think). Though they still aren't strictly "last rites" if he's already dead, which I take to be your point.
