The armed occupation of the refuge would span 41 days. Some days were so mundane it appeared the standoff would never end. Others were packed with incredible drama and intrigue. The Oregonian/OregonLive's coverage of the standoff included more than 350 articles, hundreds of photos and dozens of videos. This chronology captures the highlights. Tell him the way things have been going down, he'll get protective custody or solitary, if he's worried about prison rape. (51,129 posts)Executive Director Jennifer Rokala:
The wheels of justice may move at their own pace, but it was only a matter of time before the law caught up with Cliven Bundy. The men and women who manage and protect American public lands, whose lives have been threatened by Mr. Bundy and his family, are safer today. Cliven Bundy and his family do not speak for the very large majority of Americans, from ranchers to hunters and hikers to mountain bikers who deeply value and support American public lands for our generation and the next.
Were thankful that the FBI and Oregon State Police brought the takeover of the wildlife refuge to a peaceful conclusion and no more lives were lost. After the investigation at the refuge is complete, we look forward to seeing the gates opened up so all Americans can once again enjoy our public lands.

... the 69-year-old patriarch will be answering charges stemming from a 2014 armed standoff that forced federal officials to release cattle being rounded up ....
.... Cliven Bundy is charged in the Nevada case with conspiracy, assault on a federal officer, obstruction, weapon use and possession, extortion to interfere with commerce, and aiding and abetting. If convicted of all six charges, he could spend the rest of his life in federal prison and face more than $1 million in fines.
Officials won't say if a grand jury has been hearing evidence in the Nevada standoff. But additional arrests are widely expected. Bundy and his sons could still be indicted.
The criminal complaint refers to at least four co-conspirators, but not by name. It accuses Bundy of unlawfully directing them and "more than 200 followers" to stop federal agents and contract cowboys who were trying to enforce a court order .....

Updates:
2:02 p.m.: The FBI news conference begins, and it also releases a statement on next steps involving the refuge. In part, it said:
The refuge will remain closed for "some number of weeks" as law enforcement maintains security checkpoints around the crime scene.
Agents are scouring the refuge to ensure no one else is there. Then they will search for bombs, which could take days.
Then teams will document and collect evidence. Forensic examiners will work to recover and process computers and electronic devices. Collection could take several weeks, and analysis could take several months.
Other teams will work on cultural property investigations with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Burns Paiute Tribe to identify and document possible damage to artifacts and sacred burial grounds. The process could take weeks.
Through the process, the FBI will consult with Fish and Wildlife Service about returning the refuge to the agency.
A federal indictment naming seven more people associated with the occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was unsealed Thursday. ....

The armed occupation of an Oregon refuge, which ended yesterday, is a depressing testament to decades of paranoia
Gary Legum Friday, Feb 12, 2016
.... There was the surreality of Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, previously best known for being such a perfect representative of glib wingnuttery that she might have been grown in the same lab that produced Glenn Beck, putting in a heroic effort to talk the occupiers down ....
... there was genuine pathos in the voice of David Fry as this sad and desperate young man, the last holdout to surrender, urgently tried to convince Fiore and others that seemingly every conspiracy theory he had ever read on the Internet was indeed true. ....
... what was most obvious in the long, long list of grievances that Fry, Anderson, her husband Sean, and the fourth person, Jeff Banta, was that these were people steeped in the muddled and reactionary right-wing politics ...
... First there was the disbelief that no one, not undercover Oath Keepers posing as FBI agents or Rush Limbaugh in L.L. Bean outerwear and a surplus Desert Storm Humvee, was coming to rescue them and kick off a revolution. There was the dawning awareness that they might just be a bunch of sad-sack working stiffs huddled in the miserable cold in the ass end of nowhere, soon to be held accountable for the various laws they had broken.
In short, they became aware that, far from being great patriots striking a blow for tyranny, they might not actually matter. That it had all been a grift ....

The criminal complaint filed against rancher Cliven Bundy today in U.S. District Court in Nevada revealed new connections between the April 2014 standoff in Bunkerville, Nevada, and the January 2016 standoff outside Burns, Oregon.
Most significantly, the complaint establishes that federal prosecutors in Nevada may be preparing to charge the alleged leaders of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge occupation in Oregon for their earlier roles in the confrontation with law enforcment officers trying to impound Cliven Bundys cattle in Bunkerville in 2014. ......
Four people listed as Cliven Bundys criminal co-conspirators in the 2014 Nevada standoff have been arrested and are detained on federal charges lodged in another district, according to the complaint.
The complaint does not name those co-conspirators, but details in the document make it possible to identify them as Cliven Bundys sons Ryan and Ammon Bundy, Montana militia leader Ryan Payne and Internet broadcaster Peter Santilli. .....

.... Gov. Kate Brown of Oregon is seeking up to $1 million from the Legislature to offset expenditures by counties and towns, and she said the state, in turn, would seek reimbursement from the federal government.
Ronald T. Hosko, a former assistant director of the F.B.I.s criminal investigative division, said that he thought the agency would pay for its own personnel, but that the State of Oregon and the counties affected would more than likely be expected to cover their own costs. Its going to be every agency for themselves, he said.
The governors $1 million figure, equal to half of the law enforcement budget of Harney County, where the refuge is, is based on the estimated cost of personnel, transportation and lodging incurred by the states 36 counties, which all sent reinforcements to help Harney County deal with the occupation, said Kristen Grainger, a spokeswoman for the governor.
Harney County alone spent nearly $240,000 through the end of January, the latest figures available, said Laura Cleland, who was contracted to act as the countys temporary spokeswoman during the standoff. Ms. Clelands $6,400 monthly fee is included in the countys tabulation of the cost of the standoff.
Judge Steven E. Grasty of Harney County, who also serves on the county commission, said the total cost to the county could reach $500,000. Judge Grasty said the county planned to seek reimbursement directly from the occupiers, and was prepared to take legal action. ...........
