Mo. Man Arrested After Telling Black Waitress He Wanted to Show Her Where He ‘Hung’ Her Grandpa

http://www.theroot.com/articles/news/2015/01/mo_man_arrested_after_telling_black_waitress_he_wanted_to_show_her_where.html

A 65-year-old white Missouri man was arrested and charged with a hate crime after he reportedly used racial slurs toward a black waitress whom he also allegedly told, "I have a place I would like to take you where I hung your grandpa."

Tommy Dean Gaa, of Maryville, reportedly told the waitress, after she asked if he wanted wheat or white toast, that he was prejudiced and therefore would take white toast, according to a probable cause statement viewed by the Maryville Daily Forum.

Gaa also allegedly grabbed the waitress's arm so hard that it left a bruise and asked if she "liked to party."

Gaa then allegedly said, "I have a place I would like to take you where I hung your grandpa."

Gosh, I love our post-racial society!

the people I worked with were very nice decent people. I guess I was lucky.

This is the same Maryville where Anonymous got involved in exposing the coverup of a rape case. [link:http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/16/tech/web/anonymous-maryville-rape-case/index.html|

The word is "hanged," not "hung." And even if this story is a little old, it's time we got serious about teaching people to use proper English.

If I had been the judge, I'd have tacked on an extra 30 days for that alone.

Slightly more seriously, it's easy to fall into despair at the vast array of nasty, twisted bigots we face in this nation, but stories like this do contain one glimmer of hope. Imagine how much worse it would be if the vast majority of them were not this plain dumb as bricks too.

Will we talk about it again, next MLK day?

Why are you expecting to have an a$$hole free society? I am pretty sure mean people are always gonna be with us.

and has that kind of vile, gutter racism disappeared in the past year? It seems unlikely to me.

I've known people from there and they'll tell you stories passed down about hanging trees and family members who were part of lynch mobs. Also, this is where the more recent Daisy Coleman case happened. She wasn't one of Maryville's own so therefore she didn't get protection or even justice from her rapist until the story broke on NPR and in the KC Star.
