Its been so disappointing to see some presidential candidates on the campaign trail engaged in loose talk about reviving waterboarding and other inhumane interrogation techniques. It might be easy to dismiss this bluster as cheap campaign rhetoric, but these statements must not go unanswered because they mislead the American people about the realities of interrogation, how to gather intelligence, what it takes to defend our security and at the most fundamental level what we are fighting for as a nation.

(1,178 posts)We don't know whether McCain objected to Palin's selection and how much. I wouldn't be surprised if his ad visors and the Republican Party focus group tested Palin and decided that it would help the non-religious McCain to have an evangelical running mate and the Party (meaning the wealthy donors) forced the selection on him. Palin didn't have a national soapbox on which to teeter and demonstrate unparalleled skills in mangling the English language at that time and her speech at the Republican Convention was well-received. The wheels sure came off the cart quickly, though!

(90,690 posts)I can hardly wait for McCain to retire; it's time. You don't have to like the messenger to realize the critical importance of the message.
BushCheney led us down a very dark path in the annals of our country.
There have always been individuals who torture -- but we prosecute them when caught. There have always been rogue elements in law enforcement ditto, but we never made it legal. There is a dark streak in human-kind that lusts for vengeance and victory at any cost and will justify "whatever it takes." And there are sadists who just like torturing other people.
But only under the BushCheney regime did we go from being a country that never sanctioned torture .... to one that does. That is an abomination.
Obama has pulled us back from that brink as far as he can by himself, but please note that the GOP in Congress will not let him close Gitmo.
Now we have GOP candidates for president all competing to see who can be Torturer in Chief, minimizing it, redefining it, expanding its range. Beating their chests over how manly and American this is, while thousands cheer.
If one old warrior in the Republican Party (and he is an old warrior, not a chickenhawk) is actually speaking out against this terrible trend, I for one am grateful as all get out.

Sadly, he knows torture first hand. I can't imagine the nightmares he may still suffer through, meaning the torture continues.

For good measure: It's great to see his presidential campaign manager Steve Schmidt, as a TV talking head.

(10,476 posts)...it is just really, really hard to get past the "he's the one that plucked Palin out of obscurity" fact. I liked it when he took the higher ground against Bush and Rove's sandbagging in 2000, and that he shouted down those repugnant excuses for human beings the "Swiftboat Veterans" in 2004 and their anti-Kerry bullshit....
But the Palin pick is such a stain, she is such a cancer on American politics.

(581 posts)radical female doctor to run against him. John was too much for the Conservatives, accomplished too much for Arizona. There mission is deadlock and do nothing while in office. Just pick up your pay check, but don't do any work, vote for any bills. This is the new GOP Conservatives. John has saved thousand of jobs in AZ, esp for the air force bases, saved the A10, but AZ conservatives are mad.

(90,690 posts)Waterboarding is serious torture. During WW II the Japanese used it on POWs, and after the war American military officers brought the torturers to trial and hanged them by the neck until dead. I was horrified when BushCheney made this part of thei US armed forces arsenal.

"He's a loser! I like people who weren't captured and made into prisoners of war!"
He is the man who thrust Sarah Palin on the national stage, and for that we can always blame him. And some of his policies are questionable. But he's been consistent on the subject of torture (It's bad!), and he's right here. We have some scary men running for the republican nomination, and they are dangerous in the precedents they say they will set.
