BHM: huge day in black history. Civil Rights Act, Leontyne Price, etc. Read on.

First off, we mourn today the death 24 years ago (seriously? God I'm old) of Alex Haley.

50 years ago today, Andrew Brimmer became the first African American governor of the Federal Reserve Board.

52 years ago today, the House passed the Civil Rights Act.

Two amazing black singers were born today:

Roberta Flack

and the incomparable, the divine, the impeccable Leontyne Price

Man! She could sing!

Here's her singing Come Scoglio from Mozart's Cosí fan tutte.

Happy birthday, Leontyne. She's 89 today. And yes, still alive.

Oops! I see my clip is a dupe. Oh well!
Switched for some Mozart: Cosí fan Tutte.

50 years ago was 1966 and I was in 1st grade.

Only learning now there was a AA governor of the FRB then. Pretty cool.

He wanted Brimmer, and he would tell Senators who opposed him, in as many words, to "fuck off" whenever they brought it up.
