First off, we mourn today the death 24 years ago (seriously? God I'm old) of Alex Haley.
50 years ago today, Andrew Brimmer became the first African American governor of the Federal Reserve Board.
52 years ago today, the House passed the Civil Rights Act.
Two amazing black singers were born today:
Roberta Flack
and the incomparable, the divine, the impeccable Leontyne Price

Only learning now there was a AA governor of the FRB then. Pretty cool.

He wanted Brimmer, and he would tell Senators who opposed him, in as many words, to "fuck off" whenever they brought it up.
