KanCare Backlog Forcing Thousands To Wait For Coverage

The agency that now handles all eligibility determinations for the state’s privatized Medicaid program – known as KanCare – has about 10,000 pending applications.
That number has been climbing since mid-summer when the state switched to new computer system. The system--which was years behind schedule and millions of dollars over budget--is more complicated to use, so applications are taking longer.
In addition, some Kansans say they’ve been mistakenly dropped from KanCare. They say they’re being forced to go without needed care while they wait for their coverage to be restored.
