I'm sorry. I'm just not going to pretend that America is somehow above it all.

The United States government tortured people - sometimes to death - and got away with it.

To pretend America is not the sort of country that would torture people is a lie.

Instead of being outraged that candidates say they would torture people, be outraged that they can say this because Bush and Cheney tortured people with impunity. Those republican candidates know there will be no consequence for saying it - or even doing it. They can say it because they know this - and they know this because Bush and Cheney (and the rest) are still free.
