The biggest opponents of that most controversial 1% of services Planned Parenthood provides (abortion) -- are also the biggest users of it. . . . naturally. #PretentiousHypocrisy
Planned Parenthood Sees Plenty Of Christians
The newly released research, conducted by Christian research group LifeWay at the behest of pro-life group Care Net, paints a very different picture of those seeking abortions than you might imagine. The study interviewed 1,038 women who had received an abortion. Surprisingly, a full 70 percent of these women were Christian.
The studys results were broken down by religious beliefs, and Christianity was further divided into four distinct categories Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and non-denominational. The two groups with the highest reported abortion rates were Protestants (26 percent of respondents) and Catholic (27 percent of respondents).

(2,337 posts)Wait, hold on. Math time.
83% of Americans identify as Christian. Seems they are underrepresented as a share of abortions. Huh. Odd.

(1,448 posts)70% of abortions were by Xtians. So, Xtians are not underrepresented.

(2,337 posts)You'll notice that the study group consisted entirely of women who had already received abortions (70%)
The US population consists over over 80% self-identified Christians, a factor not even mentioned in the article.
Christians are therefore underrepresented as recipients of abortion according to this study.

(52,162 posts)upon the year. the year isn't provided but using 2014 data, 37% of the US is Protestant, 23% Catholic, 10% non denominational Christian, and 2% are Mormon. The Protestants are getting way fewer abortions than the general population (they should be 37% of abortions but are instead 26%), Catholics are getting a bit more (my site counts all Catholics together so they make up 29% of abortions but only 23% of the population) while non denominational are getting considerably more abortions 15 vs 10. In total, without Mormons, Christians account for 70% of the population and 70 percent of abortions. With Mormons that becomes 72% of the population vs 71% of the abortions. If the study is from any year before that, then the rate is lower, not higher since we have become less Christian over time. Even 2010 makes the population number for Christians 76%.

For the rate of abortion to be higher among Christians the proportion of abortions obtained by them would have to be higher not lower than that of their proportion of the general population.

(4,959 posts)how that compares to the general religious demographic. I also think a distinction has to be made regarding those who do identify as a particular religion while not using that as their basis for whatever political opinion they have of abortion, or even their moral conclusion about abortion.
I'm not trying to argue that there isn't hypocrisy - between personal observation, reading articles and books, and statistics I am quite certain there is, and that includes plenty of people who actively and loudly advocate pro-life and are truly nasty and judgmental about women who exercise their choice. But I do think a slightly deeper analysis of these numbers could be made.
For the record, I am, for all intents and purposes, atheist. But I do know plenty of people who are active in churches from Catholic to UU, who self-identify as Christian, and are as righteous as possible when it comes to abortion with no apologies.
The Catholic number seems particularly astounding, although according to Pew they make up 20% of the population (which also surprises me somehow).

Looking at that link I just found it is pretty comparable to the general demographic. I really do want to stress that I'm not trying to discount the point of the article in the OP - we all know that the majority of anti- abortion people are Christian, that many of them are hypocrites (well, my daughter was tempted by the devil and she is special and God will forgive her... and I'll stand here with my sign about how y'all are baby killers because it is totally different you heathen!!1! ....) and there is no doubt that they wield far more power than they should, primarily as a political tool... it is insidious. But these statistics aren't a bombshell, they are a reflection of the population, and the real hypocrites are a minority of the Christian population.
It is devastating how far we haven't come when it comes to abortion. Or I guess, how many steps back we've taken for every step forward.

(2,337 posts)What is interesting is that Christians are >80% of the population, yet according to this study only get about 70% of the abortions.
Christians are underrepresented as recipients of abortions according to this study.
Seems a good number of them aren't as hypocritical, and are as a whole less likely per capita to get abortions than the general public. You'd not realize that from the way the data is presented, though.
