I get my dry laundry soap, tuna, drinks, and snacks there.

They have good cook and serve meals in the deli.

it's very nice.

Sam's is rather junky in my opinion but they do have some good deals on name brand stuff. Have to usually get a giant size if you can use it.

I never got their meat but bought meat at Costco and it was very good.

Sams has better home decor and furniture, better liquor special items in 750ml size, good meats and cheeses, good on site bakery. Some OTCs and HABA are lower priced than costco.

Sams has the best probiotic at any price, and the best price on fiber gummies.

Gas is about a nickel to a dime higher than costco here in phx. I paid 1.59/gal last week at costco.

if they let you in. It's probably OK for some things.

When the Costco opened here, you had to join before they let you in. So I joined, after hearing so much about it.

Then, when I got in they hit me with upscale watches and electronics just inside the door. Then unmarked rows and rows of stuff, so if I wanted coffee, I had to run up and down every aisle to find it. Most of the stuff they had I could get cheaper at K-Mart or the local supermarkets when they ran a sale. Or sometimes when they didn't run a sale. And the selection wasn't that great-- a lot of name brands, but not so much special stuff that I find locally. And nothing close to what you get at Trader Joe's.

The bakery was extraordinary, and the deli was pretty good. And I did get a few good deals here and there, but it just wasn't worth it to renew. They brag about their cheap rotisserie chicken, but after waiting on line for the damn things to finish cooking, I figgered the two bucks I'd save wasn't worth it.

Now, I still have my BJ's membership. I thought BJ's would close with the new, huge Wal-Mart and Costco just up the road. No way-- it's doing better. It has most of the stuff people around here want at good prices. But it still has very limited selections on most things.

So, Sam's Club is more of the same-- definitely check it out, but don't expect it to do wonders.

And you did reveal the real secret - stock up on things at supermarkets when they have sales.

I go with a list, but usually end up with some impulse buys: last time it was underwear, socks, a rug to replace the one the cats demolished, and some flower bulbs. They do have the best prices around here for whole chickens and paper goods, which is why we have a membership: it's a little better than break even for two people.

We prefer Costco even though it's much farther away. Sam's is more oriented toward small businesses and carries a lot of restaurant and vending supplies. Costco is more upscale and oriented toward consumers. Also, Costco has a far more efficient checkout.
