James Taylor concert...

James Taylor is scheduled to perform in a neighboring city in April. I haven't gone to a concert in 20+ years, but really wanted to go to this one. I decided to check availability and pricing today and was absolutely astonished at the ticket prices. The cheapest single ticket, which is in the upper upper level is $95.00. Wow is all I can say. I remember when Paul McCartney was playing in Atlanta in the 90's. The cheap tickets were $60 each. I told my wife then, that if John Lennon came back to life and the Beatles got back together, that I wouldn't pay that much to go see them on a reunion tour.

How could anyone justify paying that much for a single ticket, let alone buy a second one for their spouse? Absolute insanity.

I'm a huge JT fan, and as a guitar player, I've taken the time to learn a number of his songs. He's a unique musical performer. An extremely talented guitar player, and song writer. Not to mention his vocal performance, which is astounding. But... I'm not a rich person, so I'll have to set this one out. Sorry James.

$65 and $85. I saw him way back in 82, I think it cost about $10-15 in a 2500 seat venue.

Good show. Don't remember what it cost.

They had a 20-30 minute intermission during the show, and James sat on the edge of the stage signing autographs and talking to fans the entire time.

The problem with prices is brokers have sophisticated robots that buy up all the tickets the second they go on sale and have HUGE service charges. I logged on a couple of months ago to buy Springsteen tickets, I hit "buy" the second they went on sale and it was sold out. But re-sellers had them for $300 a minute later.

Fuck that.

6. I find many events like that pricey/too much

Years ago, my daughter was nuts about the Backstreet Boys who were coming to town. A radio station had some sort of phone in contest. Every morning, she'd get up early and start phoning. This went on for 2 months? at least. I took her to school after the final radio show on the day of the concert. It was brutal. She was so heartbroken. I think she thought if she tried hard enough, it would happen - she'd win. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

The concert was completely sold out. I had a heck of a time trying to find tickets. Finally, I got a hold of some scalper. My daughter was way too young to go alone with a friend, so I bought four almost front row/floor tickets (for her sister and mother & I). Now, this was brutal - $900 for a bubblegum band. By the time we'd parked, got food and souvenirs, it was over a grand. I'd been chronically ill and money was tight. We could not really afford it at the time.

Was it worth it? Yep, every penny.

I like JT as well. Life is too short. Think about treating yourself if you can.

I just paid $120 (total) for two tickets for a summer concert. I have worked my ass off this past year trying to finish my book, and I rarely buy myself anything "extravagant." I thought, "The hell with it!" It will be a spectacular night with my best friend.

Because my parents are huge JT fans, too! They played "Sweet Baby James" as a lullaby when I was a baby because it was the only thing they could find to put me to sleep!

I've heard that one reason that ticket prices are getting so high is that electronic scalping is becoming uncontrollable.

11. I saw James Taylor Spring 1970 and again Fall 1970 at Berkeley Community Theatre.

Pentangle was the opening act in the Fall 1970 and Odetta was the opening act in the Spring 1970 and Carol King played piano and also sang a duet and song of her own.

I like James Taylor but am only familiar with early music.

I have no recollection of the cost but likely less than $10; the concerts were field trips from a boarding high school in the east SF Bay Area.

I used to like to go to Fillmore West and Winterland at about every opportunity then; $3 on Thursdays and Sundays and $3.50 on Fridays and Saturdays plus one got a nice handbill or poster sometimes on S/S. Free apples. The shows were awesome. Plus light shows. Among the not yet well known opening acts were Elton John, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top .... It helped having parents over 400 miles away.

Haven't been out to see live music since 1994 (Dave Lindley and El Rayo Ex and Spirit at bars/clubs in Eureka).

Haven't been to a large rock show since 1987 (Grateful Dead) but tickets were on the order of $20.

Musically worth it, but the prices are insane these days. It's nice to hear James singed autographs and shook hands at the interval with anyone there because while you might not know this many performers sell that 'service' as part of a premium package....with much, much higher prices.

I read something about spending a thousand dollars for a single evenings event in one of the replies here.

I'd rather pay my bills this month.

I once had a conversation (many years ago) with my sister-in-law who was much younger than me. She had come to my very small, very affordable home for a visit. I was driving a Dodge Dakota at the time with stock, well, everything. She had recently purchased a Toyota pick-up truck from her father. She had purchased some really nice rims for the truck. She asked me why I hadn't purchased rims for my truck. Mind you... the whole conversation was surreal to me, but I completely understood that she was a teenager and didn't realize what the value of a dollar was. My response... I turned toward my very small house and actually pointed at it and said... "There are my rims."

I think we've completely lost the concept of what the value of a dollar is. In America, we're willing to pay extremely huge amounts of money for instant gratification. I think we really should, as a group, just say NO F'N WAY I'M GOING TO PAY THAT MUCH FOR SO LITTLE!!!!!!! Until we do we're all going to have to either sacrifice, or bite the bullet and pay the greedy bastards. Not me, because I really hate the greedy bastards, and hope they choke on their money.

Not saying that JT is greedy mind you. I'm still a fan. I'll simply just have to listen to my record albums. Too bad though. It's a concert that I really would have enjoyed attending.
