Two of North Carolinas congressional districts were racially gerrymandered in a 2011 redistricting and must be redrawn within two weeks, a U.S. appeals court panel ruled on Friday.
The order written by Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Roger Gregory bars elections in the majority black districts, the 1st and the 12th, until the new maps are approved. North Carolina congressional primaries are scheduled for March 15
This Court finds that Congressional Districts 1 and 12 as drawn in the 2011 Congressional Redistricting Plan are unconstitutional, Gregory wrote.
The ruling said race had been the main factor when the Republican-controlled legislature redrew the boundaries and state lawmakers were not justified in using that benchmark.

(20,453 posts)I don't have a good schematic, but you get the idea when it comes to about 2,400 plus people living within it. No one seems to remember who their congress critter is.
I am trying to get signatures in the 14th congressional for someone who needs 250 signatures as a delegate for Bernie. He's in Pittsburgh, and the sliver runs down through my ward.
This is quite a disadvantage when the state started requiring MORE signatures (it never was 250 when I ran back in 2000 for Bill Bradley).
Yeah, we're all gerrymandered out of what was a balanced ward. I'd like to know how to challenge it, but I'm a little busy right now working, being involved in this community, and volunteering for Sanders.
What an evil plan the Republican led PA General ASSembly cooked up HERE!

The current reps are G. K. Butterfield (D) and Alma Adams (D). By redrawing them we could lose the seats.
