Ben and Jerry's is scooping up vegan ice cream.
The ice cream maker from Vermont has announced non-dairy versions of these flavors: P.B. & Cookies, Coffee Caramel Fudge, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey. They'll be available by the pint and at the company's Scoop Shops.
The vegan flavors will be made with ice almond milk instead of cream.
Ben & Jerry's is not the first company to produce vegan ice cream. Various ice cream shops and distributors in New York City already offer it, including DF Mavens, Alchemy Creamery and Raw Ice Cream Company.

unfortunately they are owned by unilever which is huge on animal testing, but for many who are vegan or have food allergies, its an option

they have come a long way, and for vegans and people with food allergies, they are a nice option.

(18,402 posts)But for all others, I don't see the point. I am not a big ice cream eater, but when I do have it, I am super choosy. I'd rather not eat it at all than have crappy ersatz ice cream. That's just me, though, so I'd better just shut up about it.

(12,655 posts)i don't even have ice cream often, and it is usually on cake. but the ones now are pretty good. if they were awful, i would probably skip it altogether or switch to sorbet.....
and yes, for those with allergies, esp kids, its great for them not to have to be left out

(3,261 posts)And while I've been disappointed (not greatly... just moderately) with most of the ice cream offerings, some are pretty good. I look forward to seeing what B&J's options taste like!

(12,655 posts)hope you like it! i have never been a huge ice cream fan, so it was never a big deal for me.

ps the book vegan planet is excellent if you are looking for a good all around recipe and info book

(3,261 posts)I've definitely been impressed with vegan cheese substitutes - I love Daiya's Monterey Jack block. I'm not sure if I could have stuck with veganism for very long in the days before Daiya, Sour Supreme, etc. It was surprisingly easy to give up meat, eggs, milk and butter but, as a baker, I was really worried about things like cream cheese and sour cream. I love making stuff that is good enough to fool the omnivores!

(12,655 posts)who went vegan before all the cool stuff was available. as much as there is wonderful food that is naturally vegan, we have been so conditioned in the u.s. to use cheese and other things to "dress up" other foods.
and i am sure the usda and big ag had nothing to do with that. gotta go put my on..
(but i really do believe they have colluded into duping us to buy their big ag heart killing death products...)

(7,107 posts)It's not ever going to as good as a super premium buttery ice cream such as Graeter's Ice Cream but it's almost as good as a medium quality Ben & Jerry's type ice cream.

(12,655 posts)soy, too. cashew is not quite as smooth but is still pretty good. i guess its all in what you like

(12,655 posts)it is probably better suited for vegans. some of the other companies only make the non dairy versions, so for allergies, they would be better. there are also some people (like myself) who can handle the shared equipment products most of the time.
for alleric folks, its read read read labels, always....
thanks for noticing that

(12,655 posts)i dropped toms after they sold out to colgate palmolive. thats what this corporate practice of gobbling up small companies ends up doing....restricting our choices in every way.
sigh....

(918 posts)last night. That is, if you don't count the bacon, cheese and mayonnaise.
Had some some leftover eggplant and chick peas, so the burgers were vegan.
