Thailand hopes Chinese New Year tourism brings prosperity
BANGKOK - With the Chinese New Year looming, Thailand's tourism industry is hoping that the Golden Week beginning Feb. 8 will give a boost to the only bright spot in the country's sluggish economy.
State-owned Airports of Thailand, which operates six airports in major cities such as Bangkok and the southern resort of Phuket, is expecting 4 per cent more passengers daily during the Feb.4-10 Golden Week, than in January. At Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport, airlines have requested for additional slots for 470-plus flights during the period, mainly chartered from China.
To cater for increasing traffic, AOT will be opening its third boarding lounge this week at a brand new terminal of Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport, which mainly serves low-cost carriers.
Asia Aviation (AAV), the operator of Thailand's largest low-cost carrier Thai AirAsia, launched daily flights between China's Wuhan and Phuket on Feb. 1, hoping to benefit from the holiday season.
