Congressman: Malheur occupation costing state, local law enforcement $100,000 a week

... Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer ... on Wednesday introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would require the federal government to quickly reimburse local and state agencies for those costs, and allow the federal government to pursue civil legal action against the armed militia members to recoup the money ...

“It must be made clear that armed takeover of government or private facilities, for grievances real or imagined, is absolutely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. … It’s not just enough to enforce the law. We should recover damages from lawbreakers who tear up the landscape, degrade wildlife habitat, and destroy property. … When we talk in trillions here in Washington, DC, maybe talk of $100,000 here or a million dollars there doesn’t sound like very much, but to the state of Oregon, it matters. For this small community, a few hundred thousand dollars has a significant impact on the local taxpayer. They shouldn’t be made to pay the bill.”

... For schools, Superintendent McBride estimates that the district is out $247,500 — $179,500 for the week that they were closed, and since then, $4,000 a day for extra mental health counselors and security personnel ...

.... Harney county judge Steve Grasty estimated that security and closed schools and offices came to .. almost $500,000 per week. Oregon Governor Kate Brown has a more conservative estimate for just law enforcement, but says that costs are still $100,000 per week to local and state agencies ...

... the Bureau of Land Management office .. remains closed, with .. employees on paid leave. That means the government is shelling out $117,000 per week for no return in labor ...

Added up, the above costs to schools, in law enforcement, and in government work come to $1,138,900. A loss in recreational tourism could add to that, as will the necessary repair work .. each day the occupation continues ...

... are approving each other's overtime hours and approving requests for more officers. All this so they can sit around eating doughnuts.

If they had cordoned off the place in the beginning, the costs would have been minimized.

It's a big Law Enforcement party.
