I've learned one thing tonight, that it's ok to shit talk Iowans and middle America.

Pretty sad, there are lots of liberals and progressives here. Further, we helped deliver Obama to the White House and we have a strong civil rights history. The Democratic Party can't win with just the coasts, stop turning up your nose to us.

who vote against their own best interests. Not as bad as the deep south, but it does make you wonder. It is literally EVERYWHERE. Teachers, federal employees, and just generally impoverished people who HATE the Democrats.

Iowa is a beautiful state, but it is full of some rather confusing people (so is Nebraska and Wisconsin for that matter though...)

Is it saying that Iowa is a rather insignificant state with a below average sized population that should not have as much of a say as it does as to who becomes the nominees for the major parties? Then I guess you can count me along with those who are "talking shit" about it.

without any family ties to the State and no need to reside near their work for they both work on the road. They love it and they are no fools. I've been there and it is very pretty and the people were great to us in the cities and in the country. Aside from the 'oh my God that's a lot of snow' materials, I have nothing bad to say about Iowa.

I spent some time in Dubuque and was amazed by what an awesome city it is. I had never heard much about Iowa but it is a pretty great place. I have gone to Iowa a few more times since and every time I have thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It is not demographically typical of the US - it has a much higher white population than the US as a whole. That means the results of the Iowa Caucuses are not necessarily what we will see elsewhere. And I do question why two of the whitest states in the union have such a huge say in the election process.

However, I do not think Iowa is anything but a delightful place, based on my experiences there.

Iowa, what a joke.

How absurd is it that all this attention and money is spent on Iowa.

Religious, older, white republicans. Mostly, right?

Who cares what they want and who they vote for.

The first primary should be Calif followed by New York or something like that.

Ridiculous, and how much longer can this be tolerated given the demos changing the way they are in this country!

It's always open season on us. For the record, I've only seen one or two posters saying anything negative about Iowa, besides the fact that the state is more white and religiously conservative than the nation as a whole.

and replace our antiquated, unrepresentative caucuses with primaries.

We even passed a referendum here to do so, but the State Party went to court to be allowed to retain its caucuses for delegate selection -- and won.

So it's not just about Iowa -- for me it's about moving to a primary system in all the states that are still clinging to unrepresentative, non-inclusive caucuses.

P.S. Your forward stance on marriage equality was absolutely wonderful . . . but I bet it didn't come out of a caucus decision.

I live in the South and Southerners are often portrayed as a bunch of Confederate flag waving, illiterate, backwards rednecks. While there are plenty of those type of people here, there are also lots and lots of progressive liberals, too. Every state and region has their fair share of idiots.
