After a bit of research I should have done first, if a Presidential election goes to the House

1. The newly-elected House votes

2. They must choose from among the three top Electoral Vote recipients

3. They vote by state caucus.

#3 is quite interesting in the context of 2016.

1. Hasn't happened in so long that it's really not worth considering.

A bit like a brokered convention, which is, quite frankly, the wet dream of political observers everywhere. But, just to throw some cold water on the possibility, a brokered convention hasn't occurred since 1948 for Republicans, and 1952 for Democrats. And in the years since then, the setup for selecting a nominee has evolved to the point where a brokered convention is close on to impossible.

Similarly, the chances of a Presidential election going to the House in vanishingly small. So don't even begin to put your hopes on that.

2. Not bloody likely with these candidates, parties.

Does anybody realistically think that any of the current GOP lunatics will come close to winning in November, let alone an electoral vote tie, which itself is a true long shot even if it was a close contest?

Any gum flapping about this upcoming election being decided in Congress is not only premature... Well, let's just leave it at: does anybody have a plausible scenario where that happens?

3. Think of this scenario...

What happens if the GOP goes nuts and forces a convention battle and Trump decides to run 3rd party.
Let's also consider that Michael Bloomberg jumps in the race. And that Hillary Clinton eeks out a primary win over Bernie.

You'd have the Republican and the Democrat, but then Bloomberg and Trump running 3rd party. In such a scenario, Bloomberg and Trump could win some electoral votes and pull from each side. Republican voters will be very angry at the establishment and vote for Trump. Many Democrats may not be willing to vote for Hillary. You see many here on DU who have said they will not.

Now, according to the rules of the electoral college, someone has to get to 270. If no candidate gets to 270, then the election goes to the House.

4. Yes, but that scenerio is not likely to happen.

Let's burn that bridge when we get to it.

Right now, nobody sees a scenerio where the 2016 election goes to Congress, except maybe extreme speculation, which means it is likely utter rubbish. One would hope.
