"SNIP..............
Three out of every five Americans views Donald Trump unfavorably, according to Gallup's most recent two-week average for all of the candidates. That's the highest among the Republicans and the highest of any candidate in the race at this point.
It's so high, in fact, that Gallup's Frank Newport wanted to see how it compared to the peak unfavorable ratings earned by every candidate back to 1992, when Gallup began tracking the data as it does now.

(65,357 posts)5. His ~30% of the Republican base voters has him in the lead only
because there are so many (narcissistic) candidates running in the GOP primary, thus dividing their supporters among them, so that 30% "trumps" anything any one of the other candidates can muster.
A gallup poll in 2014 had this result:
Forty-two percent of Americans, on average, identified as political independents in 2013, the highest Gallup has measured since it began conducting interviews by telephone 25 years ago. Meanwhile, Republican identification fell to 25%, the lowest over that time span. At 31%, Democratic identification is unchanged from the last four years but down from 36% in 2008.

When you take 30% of registered Republicans, who comprise just 25% of the electorate, that shows him to have very little support for the general election.amounts to significantly less than 10% of voters. Even if you assume that a small percentage of Democrats and Independents would vote for him, that still doesn't add up to all that large a chunk of voters.
