23. Manufacturing each vehicle has its own carbon footprint, as well

The carbon footprint of making a car is immensely complex. Ores have to be dug out of the ground and the metals extracted. These have to be turned into parts. Other components have to be brought together: rubber tyres, plastic dashboards, paint, and so on. All of this involves transporting things around the world. The whole lot then has to be assembled, and every stage in the process requires energy.

(snip)

This is only a guideline figure, of course, as some cars may be more efficiently produced than others of the same price. But it's a reasonable ballpark estimate, and it suggests that cars have much bigger footprints than is traditionally believed. Producing a medium-sized new car costing £24,000 may generate more than 17 tonnes of CO2e – almost as much as three years' worth of gas and electricity in the typical UK home.

Everything has multiple sides, but I don't think ending manufacturing is a reasonable solution to environmental problems.

already 21 yrs old. Loved it. I wasn't a bumper sticker kind of a person until Obama and I have one now. It was smart to put that sign on the car. Wonder what dad thought.

Of course we went and got a car loan at the time and he co-signed for me. New car and at the time my car payments were like $75.00 a month. I owed $1,500. I paid ahead of time and paid it off. It was one of those VW beatles. I wouldn't trade it for nothing. Those are ideal for young people today. I wish they made cars like that today.

BTW, the Beetle had its origins in the very last months of the Weimar era and if it hadn't been for Ganz's 'Maikafer' the Beetle as we know it might not have been mocked up back in '32. Hell, even Hitler was impressed by the first designs(though production was only commissioned for the military).

when it was required by my job.
My family did not have any car -if they couldn't walk it was the bus or subway always or a bike

It is not crazy or impossible

I know many people who are over 40 and do not have a car-

in some cities it is a curse not a benefit
I am not commenting on the global warming snark -just the fact that so many think you cant get around without a car

That is why I do not believe high speed rail dollars will be well accepted or become ways of transit for most in this country like it has in many other places of the world. It will be a dud
Most Americans will never leave their car for a train . Not here; maybe when they visit Europe for a lark they would try one but not here.
Mass transit is not in the minds of most even though more and more are in metro areas ( I understand the rural argument)

38. Even when I take BART I still have to get there
Sun Jun 3, 2012, 11:02 AM

I live in a place where no buses run from where I live to the Bay Area Rapid Transit which is 6 miles away on steep terrain. So I have to drive 12 miles a day to get on it. Biking is out of the question since just about the only way to get from my home to UC Berkeley is via a freeway.

I now carpool, but still that contributes to the global warming climate disaster. I think a good solution would be to convert existing cars to at least use electrical power partly would help the situation. I can't afford to buy any new car, much less a hybrid or electric one. But I don see more and more of them on the freeways.
