In California, retail workers who ‘sacrifice’ their Thanksgiving may receive double pay

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/2016/01/29/in-california-retail-workers-who-sacrifice-their-thanksgiving-may-receive-double-pay/

Yes, it’s only the end of January, but one California state lawmaker is still bothered that some people have to work on Thanksgiving day.

Of course there are essential life-or-death jobs that can’t pause for holidays, like doctors, nurses and law enforcement. But she’s talking about the recent trend of moving Black Friday shopping up to Thanksgiving, which means retail workers are asked (sometimes forced) to work on the holiday reserved for most as a day with loved ones.

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez on Thursday – about 300 days, or 10 months, until next Thanksgiving – moved a bill through the California General Assembly that would require large chain stores to pay workers double on Thanksgiving.

Last year, one-third of the 151 million shoppers over Thanksgiving weekend did shopping on Thursday.

I was pretty pissed off when I learned one former employer didn't pay holiday pay. So pissed I quit on the spot.

Oh, it was Panera and they still don't. They really suck when it comes to employee compensation.

I had 1000 customers go through my register during an 8

hour shift.

It was a madhouse.

It was at K-Mart.
