It never was just business - the tragic core of the Greatest American Film ever.

Abe Vigoda will live on forever!

Rest in peace, Mr. Vigoda.

"Can't I get a pass, Reaper?" ... "Can't do it, Sal."

During that Super Bowl commercial a few years ago, the Snickers one that re-launched Betty White, Abe gets sacked at the end. I loved it. I jumped up and tried to explain who Abe Vigoda is to my neice and nephews. They didn't share my enthusiasm for an icon of reserved & deadpan.

I grew up on Barney Miller, discovered Godfather movies later.

Only saw Godfather movies after college. They are my FILs favorites. I have been meaning to watch them with my 18 year old daughter. I need to upgrade to either DVD or streaming since my videos (well worn) are VHS.

A couple of the guys in that clip have the nerve to look sort-of sorry about what's about to happen to Tessio. You don't see that with modern day mobsters like the Republicans or the Big Money Boyz.

I really liked him. I had the "Abe Vigoda Status" as my screensaver thorough much of grad school because another grad student and I got into an argument over him being dead already.

But his site says he is dead. I still don't know whether to believe it or not. What other person has a keep-alive site? One of a kind.

He liked to tell the story of how he won the role of Detective Fish. An exercise enthusiast, Vigoda had just returned from a five-mile jog when his agent called and told him to report immediately to the office of Danny Arnold, who was producing a pilot for a police station comedy.

Arnold remarked that Vigoda looked tired, and the actor explained about his jog. "You know, you look like you might have hemorrhoids," Arnold said. "What are you — a doctor or a producer?" Vigoda asked. He was cast on the spot.

That website's been around since 2001. I checked it every few months.

What's awesome is he had fun with the whole thing:

Continuing with the gag, Vigoda appeared frequently to make fun of his status on the television show Late Night with Conan O'Brien, including a guest appearance on the show's final episode. In the 1998 New York Friars' Club roast of Drew Carey, with Vigoda in the audience, comedian Jeffrey Ross joked, "my one regret is that Abe Vigoda isn't alive to see this". He followed that with "Drew, you're a big gambler, what's the over-under on Abe Vigoda?"[20] On January 23, 2009, Vigoda appeared live on The Today Show. He said he was doing well, joked about previous reports of his death and announced he had just completed a voice-over for an H&R Block commercial to air during the Super Bowl.

It was a great publicity stunt that kept Abe in our hearts and minds longer than he might have stayed. What a lucky guy to have such a long life.

Here he is on Letterman during one of his deaths.

In fact Barney Miller is one of my all time favorite TV shows. Wish I could buy a DVD of all episodes. Anyone who saw the 'brownies' episode would appreciate how good it was. Not much worth watching since that era.

Loved him and the other detectives in Barney Miller. I will always love that show. Own the dvds too. I was in high school when it ended their 8th season. I was actually depressed for some time.
