Study: Fat and carbs actually release pain-relieving opoids and calming cannabinoids

snip

Scientists have in fact used brain-scanning technology to prove that eating substances such as sugar, fat and salt is closely linked to emotional centres in the brain, proving we literally self-medicate our feelings with food.

‘Fat and carbohydrate release pain-relieving opoids and calming cannabinoids – class A drug-mimicking substances – into the brain making us feel instantly better,’ says Professor Buckroyd.

Trouble is, the more we use food as a sedative or a counsellor or a fix for our feelings, the less we draw on other self-soothing options, such as talking things out or learning to comfort ourselves in other ways, says Dr Goss.

‘That is when emotional eating can become a habit that’s hard to break,’ he says.

because I am prediabetic (With excellent results I might add). But I have also noticed I have more anxiety. I just worry and fret more.

if you eat the carbs, fat etc.

it would be much better to figure out a way to deal with it without eating stuff you shouldn't.

Sad, depressed, hurting, aches and pains are all solved by ice cream, caramel sauce and whipped cream topped off with sprinkles.

Kendo and exercise. The temptation is always there . I deal with it by eating fruits and massages and computer games.

If I can do it anyone can. Just need to be determined. I used the massages as my reward. You have to trick your subconscious. The nice thing about kendo is its a family tradition mom was Japanese and practiced. And two kendo is bad ass. Basic light saber moves are taken from kendo. But really most important you just need to find something you like to do and do it. Different solutions for different people.

I too had the triple bypass in 93' - by the way, just kiddin' about eating sweets. I just don't find them as appealing as they used to be.

Guess we're all different. When I get stressed or depressed I simply stop eating--everything. Actually have to force myself to eat and it's horrible.

and very true.

I go through periods where I eat exceptionally well, then periods where I allow myself more carbs and fat and sugar.

Two weeks ago I was grouchy and slightly achy. I ate a piece of chocolate cake and felt almost euphoric. It was the first time I had ever noticed such a startling effect (in my 40-something years!)

Plus, I get fat, which makes my joints hurt even more (not good for the arthritis, either).

Most people on low carb experience improved mood and better emotional health, along with clearer thinking and better memory. I know I do. I'm so perky and happy, I make Katie Couric look like a candidate for electroshock therapy.
