(131,223 posts)but my friends friend is obviously NOT interested in FACTS! Complained about lies of 'liberal' media! We've finished the 'discussion' now, but at least I was able to provide SOME facts.
I rarely get into political debates on FB, but I think I survived this one.

(20 posts)I just signed up at DU (even though I have been lurking forever). First of all I wanted to type longtime demolurker when I signed up but it ended up "longime demolurker".
I need advice. I have a Republican at work who is really pizzing me off! I ended up sending this person the great post thanking Democrats (o Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.....)
This is the response I received (I need a reply, pretty please)!.
Good afternoon!
I assume big business provides the job, a plant that makes the coffee, a big business that makes the medication, the bacon and water plant, build the actual subway station.
I am all for helping the less fortunate, believe me I am. What I dont like are the ones that take advantage of whats given them free of charge. Its not free for the workers who provide the service, though. I dont like the entitlement attitude. I do get your point. But the more people get for free the more they want, and I just cant afford giving more. Its the middle class that suffers. The high wage earners want more and are greedy. I understand that. I look at things more scriptually. So I say let the greedy people enjoy their lives because this is the only life they will have before judgment day. And they cant take their money where theyre going. And I could go on from a scripture standpoint, but It would be a long email. This world is messed up, and will continue to get worse. Jesus teaches us to keep our eyes on whats above, and not here. He teaches us about eternity not life here thats temporary.

(39,665 posts)Direct your friend to Matthew 19:21, and point out the hypocrisy of "I just can't afford giving more" if he wants to think about things "scriptually."

(22,308 posts)I don't know you or the person who is pissing you off so I don't have any specific advice. I guess I would just try to point out that the period of time when America became a super power is when we were operating under New Deal policies and the Democrats held the majority in The House for 40 years.
I would also point out that corporate officers' fiduciary responsibility is almost always in conflict with the public good. Yes big business provides the job but the government makes sure that job is reasonably safe. Yes a plant makes that coffee and the government makes sure it is not contaminated. Yes big business makes the medication and the government makes sure it won't give you a freaking heart attack. If left on their own big business will choose profit over public safety every single time.
The country is in trouble now and that trouble started with, and is proportional to, the new rise in power for the Republicans. We didn't have these problems before the Reagan era and we wouldn't have them now if we reversed those policies.
To me, cherry picking scripture for quotes that support your point of view boarders on blasphemy. I wouldn't go there unless the person I was debating went there first.
