Rocky Horror Picture Show's Fox remake is bringing back the original movie and musical's biggest breakout star: Tim Curry. The actor originated the role of Dr. Frank N. Furter on stage in 1973 and starred in the cult classic film in 1975.
For the two-hour production set to air on Fox this fall, Curry will instead tackle the part of the criminologist narrator, played by Charles Gray in the original film. Curry's classic role will be taken over by Orange Is the New Black's Laverne Cox. Adam Lambert has also been announced as Eddie, the rock 'n' roll-loving motorcycle delivery guy who was played by Meat Loaf in the film.
Other stars include Nickelodeon's Victoria Justice as Janet (played by Susan Sarandon on screen) and Disney's Ryan McCartan as Brad (played by Barry Bostwick in the film). Reeve Carney of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark will portray Riff Raff, a role originated by Richard O'Brien, who also wrote the music, lyrics and book for the musical.
Last year, the film celebrated its 40th anniversary. Key members of the cast, including Curry, Sarandon, Bostwick and Meat Loaf, all appeared on the Today Show to discuss the stage show and beloved film. The movie was also reissued on Blu-ray in a deluxe edition that came with pink surgical gloves.

(14,255 posts)The original cast was perfect, and this sounds like a train wreck. Maybe this is due to my gloriously misspent twenties and thirties, going to the midnight shows and throwing rice and hissing at the narrator.

(6,409 posts)Technology has advanced so they can do some new stuff, but the 40 year old version is so close to perfect, it might be wise to leave it alone.

(14,255 posts)I don't really know how many times I have watched it. It is perfection at the movies, sort of an "event".
Right off the bat, I can't imagine Adam Lambert vamping instead of Meat Loaf's sort of awkwardness.

(251 posts)I cringe every time I hear a remake of this or that film is in progress.
I strongly suspect Hollywood has come to realize remakes and sequels are less expensive than new movies -- most of the work has already been done and they likely already own the rights.

(57,349 posts)They're not doing remakes as tributes the way rock bands do with classics, they're churning out cheap facsimiles like the Nashville music industry.

(5,902 posts)It was creature of its time, and should be seen in that context.
This isn't to say that a remake will necessarily be a flop. But to try to bring back a hit like that will inevitably lead its fans to the disappointing conclusion that it's "somehow not the same."
And it wouldn't be (how could it possibly!).

(17,865 posts)Leave it alone. If a movie hits out of the park then why remake it (ie Rollerball, Robocop, Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Clash of the Titans, The Omen).
Try some originality in Hollywood.

(17,865 posts)I am not sure it will work with this new actress. The humor will have to be entirely different. I would almost say that the original Rocky Horror pushes the bounds of PC acceptability. If it was to be made today, it might get significant protest associated with it. Being a transsexual transvestite from Transylvania is mocked (maybe not the right word). The reaction by Janet as she turns and sees Frankenfurter would have to be entirely different with Lavern Cox than Tim Curry.
I am sure I have insulted someone with this post. If so I am sorry.

(14,861 posts)He says so himself: "I'm just a sweet transvestite..." Riff Raff calls him "Master". Everyone uses masculine pronouns to refer to him. And so on. He's male.

(9,970 posts)...FOX should run it as an annual Halloween special. By the way, FOX seems like the network to ruin it...

(45,319 posts)Rocky Horror Show is a piece of theater which ran in more than one city before it was adapted for the screen. The nature of theater pieces, musicals, is that they get revived and redone in different forms. This is not a movie, so it's not a remake. It's a TV version. That's how pieces of theater live on and continue to drag in new fans. As it were.

I will not even allow my brain to digest the fact that Tim Curry will be involved.
This never happened.
