Exiting Militia Surrounded Courthouse Demanded To See Sheriff Who Relented.

Apparently the militia who left the area after being asked surrounded the courthouse in Haney County before they left and demanded a meeting with the Sheriff. Of course he relented and had the meeting. What choice did he have being outnumbered and out gunned. So the Occupy movement was hounded out of existence were not armed and unarmed Black Lives Matter protesters were gassed and arrested AND declared terrorist by the GOP. But militia can threaten citizens with impunity.

Nothing was said about what the meeting itself was about or what was said. It would not be surprising the he was told to do nothing about the occupation. They would be back if he did?

Local authorities do not have the power or authority to deal with this problem. And they do not have the power to enforce the law in the county or in the city of Burns given the infiltration of invasion supporters probably coming to the area. Reports of intimidation, non local armed individuals in the are, surveillance by mysterious people, death threats to federal employees et al point to a town that is in reality a hostage to the situation.

The occupiers have pretty much made it cleat that they will only leave ON THEIR TERMS. And the town pretty much has no say in allowing armed individuals running around town they do not know. So where is the freedom there?

What is worse is that the occupying militia seem to make it clear that ordinary citizens do not have the right to go to the Sanctuary as long as they occupy it.

3. Right...destroying a beautiful, historical facility would certainly make a statement:

What week are we now into of the occupation?

Had this been OWS or BLM...what would be the body count and how much property damage?

This very inaction is encouraging groups across the country.

And you have the gall to call me the idiot?

5. First off, RIF (I didn't call YOU anything).

Unless you're one of the decision-makers in this, which obviously you are not (fortunately)...

More to the point, if you think it's more important to get these grandstanding morons out of there than it is to preserve a vital, historical facility used as the center of all operations on a vast wildlife refuge, then that's really all I need to know about your value system.

I certainly urge clamping down on these criminals: cut off grid electricity, prohibit all outside contact save with a law enforcement negotiator, blockade any and all resupply, and so forth. Spring's still a good way off, but they do need to be gone before it's time for work to begin in preparation for Spring migrations.

But suggesting use of a weapon that would (literally) flatten the entire compound is simply juvenile. No kinder way to put it...

A bunch of boy men playing ar soldier. All across the country you have militias gearing up because they think they can get away with it. Waco was a terrible debacle but it put the fear of God in the militias ( as well as being a rallying cry) for quite a long time

10. I think RIF="Reading Is Fundamental" -- Lizzie means you didn't read her post carefully enough.

Reading Is Fundamental is the largest nonprofit literacy organization in the United States.

In corporate America these days, RIF often means a Reduction in Force, i.e. mass layoffs, but that doesn't seem to fit here.

8. This is week 2. Alcatraz was occupied for 19 months. People came and went, celebrities visited.

I supported the Native American Activists who did that, lots of people thought Alcatraz should have been raided right away. The electricity was left on for 17 or 18 months.

Law enforcement too no lives and lost no lives in that occupation which at the peak involved hundreds of persons living on the Island.

On the other hand, Branch Davidians got the hell, as they did at Ruby Ridge.

It was a peaceful protest with zero threat of violence. Had they had guns I bet they would have been blown away fast.

Going back and forth to town has to stop. Maybe the sheriff would be better.

How many weeks did OWS criminally occupy are large park NYC in one of the densest and most politically and economic important centers of the USA, coming and going as they pleased, all largely without the support of the majority of people who actually lived or worked in the area?

The Oregon bigots are only on week 2 occupying an otherwise empty building in the middle of nowhere rural Oregon in the middle of winter. I would also note that open carry of firearms is totally legal in Oregon.

Maybe my Republicans colleagues back during OWS were right. Law and order needs to be respected and maintained at all costs, and the taxpayers shouldn't be left with the tab for such willful malfeasance. Obviously, the machine guns, dogs and water cannon should have come out by the end of week 1. We'll definitely be prepared for the next time...

More seriously, law enforcement on the scene believes patience is the best tactic to peacefully resolve the "siege." What would you suggest would be a better strategy that doesn't needlessly risk lives, create martyrs out of the militia idiots, and ensures we don't have a Waco or Ruby Ridge situation that badly hurts Democrats during this election year, and what are your qualifications to offer such a tactical opinion?
