(8,543 posts)I wouldn't break a window to gain access to a vehicle, but I certainly would break into one (without damaging it) to help an animal that was in danger.
I suppose if there was no way to get into the vehicle without breaking a window, I would do it - but I would hesitate because I don't like breaking other people's stuff (well, at least stuff belonging to people that I don't know) and there would also be some potential for harming myself or the animal.

(19,736 posts)I did that...they did nothing. Animal control didn't even show up after they told me they would. The girl came back out and left a HALF AN HOUR AFTER WE ARRIVED and drove off.

(8,556 posts)One could easily interpret that dog as sleeping/resting. I probably wouldn't smash a window unless I had observed the dog confined for a long period of time in the heat. Then I might do it. But if I just stumbled upon a vehicle, I probably wouldn't feel that I had enough info to justify breaking in.

(25,771 posts)but this clip is like the infamous 15 second soundbite that has got to say more than can be said in 15 minutes. The girls look around first, try to open the door with the handle, etc. It would also depend on where the car is - this appears to be out in the middle of a park and ride type lot. What is the weather ... if it's over 90 F., then it's probably best to get the dog out of there. If the windows weren't cracked, that is a major consideration.
However, given that you have assessed the situation to the best of your ability and come to the conclusion that the dog needed out of there...?

(10,618 posts)so apparently it's something I've already looked at. So even though I don't know what it is I know I've already seen it so I don't need to see it again. So following Mitt's example, I don't know exactly whether I enjoyed watching it, but I stand by whatever my reaction was when I first saw it.

(51,745 posts)Here's a recent story of a police dog that almost died after being left in a police car with air conditioning on. His temperature reached 107.5 degrees, but he was discovered in time and quickly taken to a vet for treatment.

(2,307 posts)1. Call the cops. (give them a very short time to arrive)
2. Continue to closely watch the dog. (break the window immediately if the dog is showing signs of stress or it is hot outside).
3. If the cops didn't show and/or the dog shows stress, break the fucking window.
Yes I would go to jail. The dog owner would brag about the day the bleeding heart liberal crashed his window when he later ran for President (Republican ticket), but I would be able to live with myself.
There is NOTHING that bothers me more than mistreating animals.
I even get mad if someone even jokes about hurting an animal.
Just yesterday my mom told me of a case of animal abuse. I told my mom I am against the death penalty except in the case of animal abuse. (yes, I know that is not a capital offense, but it fucking should be).

(1,412 posts)give a jack about the stupid owners window. They, in my opinion, are guilty of animal abuse/neglect. (use a center punch if you have one).
It was in the course of my job, but even though I am not in that line of work now, I would do the same thing without thinking about it.
Most recently, I rescued my neighbors dog, who was left in a cage in the back yard, no food or water, 90degree heat. I called animal control, then I climbed the fence, took the dog out of the cage, cooled him down, gave him food.
The neighbor's were very upset with me because I called animal control.
I told them I would do the same thing again if necessary.

(18,665 posts)What if the dog had only been there four or five minutes and was simply taking a nap while the owner was running in to pick up laundry? People lock their doors to do that now to keep people from stealing their unfortunately deaf dog. Cops love pets too, and one of them would respond in a flash.
I realize it's a terribly irresponsible thing for a pet owner to do, but I'd look pretty stupid if the dog woke up and bit me for breaking into his car. Hopefully, he wouldn't then run out into traffic.
I'm sorry if that sounds like a scene from the Simpsons, and I really don't intend to make light of the situation, but Homer has never been known to hesitate for a moment's thought before taking drastic measures either.
Having said that, it's an impactive clip, but I guess the message it sends to people who shouldn't own a pet is they may get their window smashed if they lock the door. The clip seems aimed at tugging at the heartstrings of those of us who already would never do such a thing.

(4,026 posts)I suppose it could be broken glass, but it looks more like vomit (23 secs into the video). To me that would indicate the dog is not just taking a nap. I'm with MrSlayer upthread.

(8,419 posts)1. Highly unlikely there would be no one else around to witness what was happening.
2. If some butt wipe came out and complained there would be even more people gathering causing the dog owner a great deal of embarrassment.
3. The owner would likely make the most logical choice, drive away before the cops came.
4. I have a neighbor that is the biggest softie, so the dog could be taken to her house to live a normal life.

(25,771 posts)you would call the cops first or something else like that:
The situation set up seems to be that there is no other option
even if McGyver was there. No phone, no food, no service! No nothing.
There's no one around. It would be wasted time trying to go find someone - time the dog may not have.
It's the window or the dog.
As someone else said, what if it was a baby?

(5,762 posts)The first time I was stupid enough to find the owner to give her the dog back and offer to pay for the window. I caught no end of grief and headache over that, with threats of lawsuits and the like. I think I called her a "fucking piece of trash."
Since that incident, I take the dog with me and bring him to the vet. When he's OK, I bring him to the no-kill shelter. Don't give a fuck about the owner or his car.
Needless to say, I am a neurotic mess in large parking lots.
