(11,924 posts)I wonder how they would grow hydroponically? My husband has been working with that for greens, lettuces, spinach and a few herbs (basil and rosemary). He tried tomatoes, squash, and eggplant, but they didn't do very well due to not a strong enough plant light. I bought him a new grow light set for xmas, so maybe he could give the heirloom tomatoes a try.

(36,464 posts)container growing was covered extensively. To my surprise, heirloom tomatoes thrive in containers (I needed a chair to pick the fruit from one boomer plant). Perhaps a couple of containers parked next to the hydroponics set-up with dedicated lights would work slick if the hydroponically grown ones crap out.

(60,019 posts)I am a pretty regular blogger - http://www.craiglehoullier.com/blog/
Along the top - the menu - you can find info on my books, project, and something I will be working on and improving over the coming weeks, my events - where I will be speaking, and when. I do hope to meet more and more of you as I "get around" - this will be my first time in Chicago and Kansas City. Seattle is a repeat - I love going there! I hope to add more events as the year unfolds.
OK - back to garden planning (and finishing the cream of carrot soup I've got simmering on the stove)
