"Y'all Qaeda," "YeeHawdists" and "Vanilla ISIS" are some of the clever put-downs circulating on Twitter.
Critics also decried what they perceive as a double standard in the seeming lack of response from law enforcement. If the gun-toting men were black or Muslim, went the typical argument, they would have incurred the full, militarized wrath of law enforcement.
So it might appear, but if you think law enforcement agencies are being deferential out of fear, you couldn't be more wrong. Be very grateful that federal officials know exactly whom they are dealing with: troublemakers just itching for an excuse to claim that the federal government provoked them first.

(46,757 posts)Police officers can stop and frisk black people on the street just because the police officer suspects foul play; but they won't confront a white male with a loaded gun because they don't want to provoke a situation that might offend other white folk.
Got it.

And I'm here to say that in lieu of the major discrepancies in handling white vs black citizens in this country, maybe it's time to ask the big question: What public outrage are they responding to? And what public outrage are they ignoring.
So many ways that the Feds can respond, given that we're living in the era of Big Brother and they can and have been monitoring private phone calls for over a decade.

Until there are legitimate legal consequences for armed insurrection, the Gov. will rightfully be open to deserved criticism of racism.

(269,157 posts)Let's not use euphemisms here. There have been American (and therefore home-grown) violent people of color who have not been treated with kid gloves. (Bit of understatement there.)
Even NON-VIOLENT people of color get treated violently.

(5,420 posts)but like last time, I don't think they will be. They pointed guns at federal agents. I would have been shot dead for that. Any dark skinned person would have been shot dead for that. Any OWS protester would have been shot dead for that. These NRA members are let go. It sure as hell sounds like our police even at the federal level have been bought and paid for.
As long as they are allowed to act like outlaws without getting in any trouble for it, they will continue to do this and will escalate it until someone is killed. THey are not camping on the land, they have taken over the refuge with it's buildings. THey have taken the bulldozers for their own use. They have threatened to die there. Nope, no laws broken here. I hope OWS is paying attention. Seems they didn't have to sleep outside in the cold after all. They just needed guns and a NRA memebership.

What many of us would like to see though, is those leaving the property detained or refused reentry after leaving.
But, instead, what we're getting is "well, boys will be boys, just leave them alone until we figure out how to give in to their demands".
And it is true, were they anything other than white men, this would be over and there would have been violence and the media and people who are demanding we treat these guys with kid gloves would be cheering the defeat of the "thugs" or "terrorists" (depending on the amount of melanin those in the building had).

(12,647 posts)The reason behind this so-called siege is so utterly stupid, it's hard to support any armed confrontation and possibility of death. Particularly if these yahoos are hiding behind women and children, as reported. I do however support their arrest and prosecution for the crimes they have committed. The Feds can't continue letting this shit slide because that only encourages escalation. I never understood why they didn't arrest Koresh during one of his many trips into town. The same can be done with YallQaeda because it seems they're already experiencing cabin fever.
