(CNN)A 30-year-old man has confessed to shooting a Philadelphia police officer Thursday night in the name of the "Islamic State," presumably referring to the terrorist group ISIS, according to officials at a news conference on Friday.
Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett was hit three times and suffered "some very serious injuries that will require multiple surgeries," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters Friday. Despite being seriously injured, he exited his patrol car and shot the assailant, who later was apprehended by other officers, Ross said.
The alleged assailant appeared to be targeting a police officer, Ross said. "He was trying to assassinate this police officer."

(3,343 posts)Kills 300,000 Americans a year. It's bad it happened to the guy obviously but I refuse to be scared of an organisation that managed to kill a handful of people in America a year.
150 Americans a year are killed by nut allegies. ISIS is about a big a threat as... cows which kills 20 Americans a year. And so far Americans haven't been wiped out by cows or peanuts.
If you wanna talk tragedy, the US, UK and Saudi Arabia are literally starving 2 million children to death in Yemen as we speak.
Now thats a number ISIS could only DREAM of.
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)I guess with your way of looking at things, 9/11 really wasn't that bad.
EdwardBernays
(3,343 posts)To the 10s of thousands of civilians the US has killed since the 1950s, and the medical experiments it ran on its own citizens, etc etc if all the blowback we ever got was 911 then - as awful as it was - America got off easy.
That's not to diminish it, but Americans killed how many Iraqi women and children as part of the response?
How many Iranians have we killed in the last 60 years?
Ask Guatemalans if they can think of anything worse than 911 in their history books.
Ask the Yemeni civilians being bombed with US bombs right now. Or the 6 million civilians the US is preventing access to food aid.
Or sure, why not ask the same number of Americans that died on 9/11 that die every 33 days at the end of a gun in America.
Ask the 2-3000 kids shot dead a year.
9/11 was a horrible crime. But we've done much worse and allow much worse to happen to our citizens every year.

(3,343 posts)But c'mere 20-30,000 people die at the end of a gun in America every year. Am I meant to care more about this guy because his assailant says he loves ISIS.
Plus I refuse to act all scared of terrorism which is a tiny tiny threat to Americans.

(2,931 posts)its the fact the shooter claimed he did it on the behalf of the islamic state. Trump has made a lot of statements about how we should not let any muslims immigrate here due to the islamic state, and now if someone reads this story that person might consider voting for trump

(45,319 posts)I think lopping off the heads of gay people is violent and very wrong. They say it is Islamic, and I am not going to argue with people who will in fact also lop off your head for arguing with them about Islam.
Why do you not see executions of LGBT as violence?

(10,201 posts)In fact it is safer than the majority of US cities of similar size.
You need to put in perspective. You're many more times likely to die going to the supermarket in your car, then you are to meet your fate at the hands of a terrorist. But your not afraid to head to the grocery store are you? Live your life without fear of what in all probability will never happen. Odds are you'll get your shopping done without so much as a scratch on your car, let alone an attack from a terrorist. The odds just aren't there.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)The person illustrated in this story is not a foreign terrorist it is of the domestic variety. And it is those I worry about most.
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)Terrorism is terrorism regardless of the nationality of those carrying it out. However, if you look at the big list of things that will kill you, terrorism is actually near the very bottom of the list.
I hate to be graphic about it, but here is one way to look at this... In France, on the day of the terrorist attacks, 130 people died as a result of terrorism. However about 400 died the same day from cancer, about 370 died from cardio vascular issues... Since the terror attack over 500 people have been killed there in automobile accidents.
You replied to this OP at 1:57pm EST, and since then about 160 people in the US have passed away from heart attacks, 10 have died in car accidents, 2 military veterans have committed suicide, etc... And these things don't just happen on one day. They march on happening every day.
Live on, and don't let stuff like this weigh on you.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)It'sa crazy world out there and one needs a bit of "sensible/common sense" reminders from time to time to get back on track.
Again, Perfect perspective And again, thank you
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)The upside...
Go play golf (even if you suck or have never played), municipal courses are cheap during the week. An amateur golfer, playing once a week through the course of a year will probably to get a hole in one on one... Twice. These are better odds than trying to bowl a 300 game. Neither of these things have I accomplished, however I still try.
Find yourself a clover patch... Odds are highly probable you'll find a four leaf clover in less than 5 minutes. I've done this.
Get out of town, and find a nice dark sky with little light pollution in mid-August (12-13th in 2016). Look up, and odds are you'll see about 60 to 100 shooting stars an hour. I've also done this.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)Great ideas...especially the clover patch....I am a gardener....outside and gardening is my therapy...I can disappear for hours in the dirt...I need to order seeds for this years little garden etc....My garden needs a good clean-up, and believe it or Not---it is a Sunny day (but cold) here....on the left coast.
I can only dream of not getting a gutter ball and golfing has never been my thing...
Thanks again for your kind words and good advice/ideas.
Glassunion
(10,201 posts)I just like golfing for the beauty of being outside in a quiet place where no one judges me for drinking a beer at 10am and chasing a tiny ball for 4 hours while beating it with a metal stick.
I enjoy the bowling when the weather is crummy, and no one judges me for eating 4 large soft pretzels, drinking a pitcher of beer, and yelling at a rather large and heavy ball as it travels down a highly waxed floor in an erratic path.
My favorite sport however is simply strapping on a back pack and wander off into the woods. I'm highly skilled at walking.
fredamae
(4,458 posts)I like to dig in the dirt in the worst raggiest, most Comfortable clothes I can find...."garden police" (the birds and bees) do not give a crap....I can sing and be off key..no one judges (except for perhaps-the birds), I can curse (loggers daughter_I am skilled in "cursive )
I can get dirty and everyone understands and well, I basically live in "the woods" (very rural).so I'm set to wander at will.
I also live reasonably close to the beach....now there is a place you can get lost in...salt on your lips, soothing roar of the water, the sounds of sea life, agates, rocks, small driftwood to discover and glass-blowers hide beautiful glass floats around a few times a year for people to find....Refreshing crisp wind to blow the dust off the gray matter and clear (cure) the soul-and when your really lucky..a sunset so spectacular...it lasts a lifetime.

Dylan Roof, his racism is a distraction used to sell papers? Is that your actual contention?

"He's going through a lot lately," Holliday said, adding Archer believed he was targeted by police.

(3,660 posts)There are really four options here, in decreasing order of probability.
1)He is as his and his mother's statements would suggest, an extremely devout Muslim who acted from the motivation of his genuine feelings about Islam
2) He really is involved with ISIS who knowe full well that their best path to power and a caliphate is to spark a crusading war against Islam by the west, and that there are enough fucking morons in the US to demand that if these attacks continue.
3) It's a planned patsy attack to foment anti-Islamic feeling in the US
4) He's a raving loony who was always going to shoot a cop but just happened, by pure coincidence, to have the delusion of it being caused by his religion after sustaining the illusion ol being a devout Muslim for a long time.
Trust me folks I am incredibly unlikely to shoot anyone but if tomorrow I do so and claim it was caused by my Muslim faith, feel free to suggest mental illness. If however I claim it was caused by a (first) truly militant act of American atheism, how many here would rush to say I was lying and it was really mental illness all along? If it quacks like a duck...
Reminder; absurd hypothetical above. But the difference in willingness to deny stated motivation would be immense even so.

(6,324 posts)He just was ambushed with multiple shots fired at him, was shot three times one of which broke his arm- and he immediately leaped from the car, pursued his attacker firing his pistol one handed on the run while his broken arm dangled uselessly at his side. And scored a hit on the attacker under those conditions.
And even had the presence of mind and wits about him to put the car in park so it didn't roll away when he lept out.
Well done.
