4. For a short time, the Malheur lake area was a Paiute reservation

1872-1879, I think, 1.8 million acres. Then it was taken and opened up for settlement, and the Paiutes were given nothing. They kept together in the Burns area and bought a 700 acre or so tract in 1935, which forms the reservation now that they are re-recognized. One of the sadder stories in a long list of sad stories.

we come together to mourn the forced relocation in 1856 of ALL the Native Americans from the Southern Oregon Coast, some by ship, but most were forced marched a couple of hundred miles north and many children and elders didn't survive the ordeal.
