You have a lot of rich Saudis funding terrorism because many of them are Salafists. Their ideology is just as extreme as ISIS and it is being exported across the Middle East. Also they can play the game both ways. They can fight terrorism/extremism while they also support and fund it. Economically it makes sense because as long as they can keep other oil producing countries in turmoil it makes Saudi oil more valuable in a sense and makes their security more needed.
One proof of that extremism is the status of their women. Their women are barely a shade better off than women under ISIS. As long as you are screwing your husband and staying pregnant while asking no questions and making no demands you are ok. But get out line and you could get beheaded or stoned. Another proof of that same extremist is how readily they execute people for the most spurious of reasons usually by beheading or hanging.
The Saudis are just as evil as ISIS in many ways, but they have so much oil they can control the game. They are also insulated in many ways from opposition.
If their country were destabilized like Syria and their oil was up for grabs there would be one hell of a mess internationally. It is a sad and unfortunate circumstance that such evil people particularly men have so much power in the world. And there is no easy solution. Because if you go after the Salafists in their midst there will be chaos.
PS. Oil prices are falsely low right now. When they have run others out of the market, the price will jump dramatically. And it is only a matter of time because the present low prices are not sustainable.

The US has been - by all accounts - commiting war crimes in Yemen - at the behest of SA. They turn all they touch to poison and make Iran look like Sweden.
So yeah. Stability is great but there's a point when it's just not worth it - and SA passed that point years ago.

(814 posts)With both of the posters. Saudia Arabia is such a giant pain in the ass to our country. I even have a nickname for Wahbism. Ready? What a horrible bullshit ideology. What do ya'll think?
Seriously I know what my username means but it's hard to have any love for a bunch of disgusting rich hedonists(the Saudi royal family). I would love to see Saudi Arabia get shaken up and I don't care what would happen to our oil prices. It would serve them right for all the problems they have caused.

(12,977 posts)Having a sevenfold increase in your population while living in a desert and not having jobs for most of them is a recipe for destabilization.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Saudi_Arabia
Saudi Arabia's population as of the April 2010 census was 27,136,977: 18,707,576 Saudi nationals and 8,429,401 non-nationals. About 51% of the population is under the age of 25 (as of Feb 2012). Until the 1960s, most of the population was nomadic or seminomadic; due to rapid economic and urban growth, more than 95% of the population is now settled. 80% of Saudis live in three major urban centersRiyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam. Some cities and oases have densities of more than 1,000 people per square kilometer (2,600/mile²). Saudi Arabia's population is characterized by rapid growth and a large cohort of youths.

(814 posts)I remember hearing a story on how college is covered for Saudi's, notably being able to go overseas and get it. The problem is...wait for it, wait for it....when they come back the jobs they're qualified for have been taken by foreigners. I mean like U.S. foreigners and I think it was NPR that reported on it. So they're making stuff so much worse.

(1,967 posts)If they are funding isis, and madrassas they are not creating stability. Give their money to a liberal regime and we don't have isis or madrassas. I also don't get the reasoning that we should support them because of oil. Iraq and Iran have it too.

That is our business model and were sticking to it.
