150 Armed Militia Members Take Over Federal Building

150 Armed Militia Members Take Over Federal Building

by Judd Legum at Think Progress

"SNIP..............

A group of 150 armed militia members have broken into and occupied a federal building in Oregon. The group reportedly includes three sons of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who had a tense standoff with federal officials in 2014.

......

Radical militia members from across the country descended on Harney County, Oregon today to protest the conviction of two local ranchers for arson on federal land. They claim “that the federal government had no authority in Harney County.” The militia occupying the headquarters building at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a splinter group from the larger protest. The gambit seems intended “to provoke a standoff with the federal government.”

........

In a phone interview with the Oregonian, Ammond Bundy said that “would not rule out violence if law enforcement tries to remove them.” He called the headquarters building “the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds” and said he was “planning on staying…for years.” In a message on Facebook Bundy said he planned on establishing the facility as a base for militia members across the country:

Jam their communications systems, cut off any access to email, mobile phones, etc.

Then lay out the consequences. "You are now each guilty of breaking and entering and trespassing. Those who leave now will be disarmed and given a summons to appear. You have 3 hours. Those who remain will face arrest and detention when they leave the building. Power and water are in the process of being cut as are phone lines and a cellular jamming system has been activated. Legal advisors are researching terrorism statutes to determine maximum penalties. No supplies will be allowed to enter the perimeter nor will the building be assaulted. Accounting advisors are at work totaling the cost of containing the situation and you will be assessed these costs upon conviction. Have a nice day!"

That way, there's no bloodshed and there's historical precedence for its effectiveness.

Noriega surrendered after Van Halen's "Panama" was played repeatedly and very loudly. In that case, the song choice appeared thematic. But it doesn't have to be.

There's any number of completely abominable recordings which, if played on an endless cycle at high volume, could break up this militia bunch.

Paul Anka's "Having My Baby" should be considered, IMO.

These asshats are LOOKING - actively - for a reason to start a shooting war against the government. If the government were to take any action to forcibly remove them from this building, that would do it.

My recommendation: close all the roads leading into this place, so they can't bring food in. Allow anyone who wants to leave to do so, but they can't come back in. Start playing Ozzy albums really loudly to chase off all the wildlife, so they can't poach meat. Shut off the water and power feeding the building, and dam any streams in the vicinity. Eventually they WILL come out - they will have no choice.

And as much as it angers me to say it, just let them go on home. Because no one will be "martyred for the cause" (their ultimate endgame) and no one will be "jailed as a political prisoner" (which would be nearly as good), the whole thing will be a failure in their eyes.

"Attempting to start" a shooting war against the government would be more on point. If the government does not act to remove these folks from the building, they will simply take it up another notch.

At some point, maybe this is it, maybe not, these folks will have to be shown that 200 guys and their collection of shiny pop guns is no threat to the government, not even a little threat. Anything less will simply embolden the second amendment fantasy that is entertained by many of the gun show crowd. It would be best if no one died in the process, but that outcome seems unlikely.

Simply holding back on the use of force feeds the fantasy that their collection of shiny pop guns gives them "freedom" and makes them powerful. At some point, this delusion will have to be addressed and the amount of force needed to bring an end to it will only grow over time if unattended.

I am a pacifist and oppose the use of deadly force by either side. That said, this whole situation, viewed more broadly as a social phenomenon, is likely to escalate until it is decisively brought to a halt. However it is done, their surrender needs to be prompt and unconditional.
