General Discussion

I just returned from a four day visit to my parents' home in California. We had several gatherings of the family, and politics was never a topic of conversation. My family includes every political persuasion, but generally avoids such discussions when we get together.
Since had no wi-fi access, I didn't come to DU during our trip. Frankly, it was a nice break from constantly discussion political topics.
So, how did everyone else fare at family and other gatherings over the holiday?

(6,398 posts)I've told them all that I'm a socialist and even Democrats are to "conservative" for my tastes. I've also plainly stated:
1. Capitalism and Communism have one major thing in common, great ideas on paper, fail in implementation.
2. I have a piece of paper with something about Bachelors of Science in Economics with my name on it, think that qualifies me to say, "you don't know what the hell you are talking about".
Once in a blue moon someone will "bring something up" from the "conservative view", at which point I systematically destroy it. And I don't hear from them about it again. If they are liberal, they just want to "understand" something better.

(182,868 posts)I never instigate anyway. Likewise we had no wifi until MIL got one for Christmas and they hooked it up. I was getting sick of doing jigsaw puzzles anyway. All they had on TV was people working and barely getting by in Alaska. Discovery channel. I had to go down to the red room in the basement to watch SOMEONE holiday related.

My position is that we have the internet now, no reason for actual argument/discussion.

(2,931 posts)She is somewhat scared of my condo complex catching on fire since we live on the top floor (it is a new complex with all safety measures built in, including sprinklers). I was a little trollish and told her, "I read Obama ordered the water pressure to be reduced in all the sprinkler systems in condos starting in 2016. He doesn't want anyone to die, just get burned badly in fires so there will be more enrollment in the ACA". She starting going crazy, I said I was kidding and apologized. That was all that happened.

(58,785 posts)included a friend who supports Trump and thinks we should nuke whichever Islamic nation happens to be in the news. No politics discussed, and we all had a nice time.
I've already suggested that our son might vote ahead of time, then arrange a plumbing problem and keep his friend in the basement with him until the polls close. The guy designs golf courses for a living but is a very good friend to have around when the roof falls in or some other disaster occurs. The typical good-bad duality of a strong social conservative.
