http://readersupportednews.org/opinion2/277-75/34319-neocons-object-to-syrian-democracyThe Washington Posts editorial board is livid that President Barack Obama appears to have accepted the Russian position that the Syrian people should decide for themselves who their future leaders should be when the Post seems to prefer that the choice be made by neoconservative think tanks in Washington or other outsiders.
So, in a furious editorial on Friday, the Post castigated Secretary of State John Kerry for saying after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow that the Obama administration and Russia see the political solution to Syria in fundamentally the same way, meaning that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could stand for election in the future.
The Post wrote: Unfortunately, that increasingly appears to be the case and not because Mr. Putin has altered his position. For four years, President Obama demanded the departure of Mr. Assad, who has killed hundreds of thousands of his own people with chemical weapons, barrel bombs, torture and other hideous acts. Yet in its zeal to come to terms with Mr. Putin, the Obama administration has been slowly retreating from that position.
The Russian position, which Obama finally seems to be accepting, is that the Syrian people should be allowed to choose their own leaders through fair, internationally organized elections, rather than have outside powers dictate who can and who cant compete in a democratic process. Obamas previous stance was that Assad must be prevented from running in an election.

(20,002 posts)You cannot expect fair and just democratic governance of any country by a dictator who has killed a quarter million of its people. Sheesh. I think that's sort of what the French are saying.
My latest pet theory is that the paranoid Putin is afraid anybody but Assad will hand Syria over to the West or to terrorists and he will lose his naval base on the Mediterranean--similar to the Crimea situation. He knows it's safe with Assad. I'm not sure Putin would ever trust any assurances that he can keep his base after Assad is gone.
Screw the neocons and the Bezos Billionaires' Gazette.

(58,698 posts)It never comes out any better than when we started. Sure, Assad sucks, but hey, we have our own problems right here at home.
Unfortunately, we're so fucking embedded into the ME clusterfuck that'll it will take another wrecked generation of kids to get out. Note I didn't say fix it. That is far beyond our capabilities. The best thing we will ever get out of there is us.

(20,002 posts)a clueless Republican should somehow end up in the White House. Their big-talkin' dick wagging proves they haven't learned a goddam thing from the Bush/Cheney mega-disasters leading to the current clusterfuck.

(36,418 posts)The genocidal catastrophe in Syria is largely her doing. She 's fully invested in the neocon final solution of expanding the Sunni-Shiia religious war into a new global Cold War with Russia.

(51,907 posts)And who the fuck do you think you are to say who should run for president in someone else's country? Bush, after all, was allowed to run in 2004 despite his butchery in Iraq.

(20,002 posts)do you think you are to question my opinion, which happens to be shared pretty much across the Western democracies? You seem to favor the tyranny of a "democratic" majority at all costs no matter how brutal or corrupt. I'm sure you would likewise vehemently oppose the Senate filibuster as a means of preventing the tyranny of a majority.
Let's try rigged elections. After all, it was another Russian dictator who once said: "It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything."
Wow.

(1,967 posts)when none of them would have happened if we hadn't destabilized him. Most of the deaths Winep attributes to Assad were perpetrated by Isis and the Syrian opposition who are really the same thing. We are more responsible than he is. By that arbitrary standard, Hillary shouldn't run.

Once they get the endless war thing going, common sense and rationality lose almost every time. Or maybe every time.

(1,967 posts)That is fucked up. By that standard all deaths in the civil war were caused by Lincoln. Those claims come from Winep which is a known neocon outfit that promoted most of the WMD lies. How Obama and Clinton can take them seriously is hard to understand.
