It was a dark and stormy night . . .

Sunday evening the love of my life and wife of almost 47 years was returning home from a dinner theater play and yes it was dark and stormy although there was no rain at the time and the freeway was dry. She was driving the speed limit and blending with traffic. Then she was rear ended by another vehicle. At 60 mph.

The impact destroyed the big chrome steel bumper and trailer hitch on the pickup truck, driving the bed of the truck into the back of the cab damaging both. It also catapulted her across the freeway spinning at least one 360 degree circle during which she hit another car destroying the big chrome steel front bumper of the truck and totaling the third vehicle. The truck came to rest upright in the ditch on the right hand side of the freeway facing in the direction of traffic.

The police estimate that the impact was at least 30 mph faster than the 60 my wife was driving.

Two cars totaled and we're awaiting the verdict on our half ton truck. No one was injured. Everyone had insurance. Everyone went home that night. Largely because of federally mandated improvements to automobiles. Also because everybody wasn't driving 90 mph due largely to the big reflective signs saying the speed limit was 60 mph and because our state mandates liability insurance.

Some would argue that this just proves that traffic laws don't work, can't prevent accidents and are waste of time. They will also tell you that adding technology to their own personal fetish won't work, isn't reliable and would make the object of their desire too expensive to own. The same people will say that mandated liability insurance on the inanimate objects they so covet would be too expensive while at the same time telling you that these objects are perfectly safe because they are responsible and law abiding.

I think you know who those people are and in which group/forum to find them.

An accident where one vehicle was traveling at about 90 mph and no one is hurt, great news. I'm not sure how common that outcome is where that kind of speed is involved.

You have two years to sign off on any insurance claim. You may not want to drag it out to two years, but don't be in a hurry to settle. There can be repercussions months after an accident.

Looks like my truck is totaled too and the other two cars were compacts. Because of government regulation of the auto industry everybody, big car or small, walked away without injury.

Lots of mass, and a crush able bed.
A smaller, lighter car wouldn't have been survivable without a lot of luck,
though I have heard that the rigidity of pick up trucks causes neck and internal injuries due to the initial G forces without crush to diminish the impact.

I'll still take the heavier mass in an impact like that.

Did she know she was going to be hit?

Actually that insurance is a pittance - there is a reason pools and big dogs will raise your insurance premiums but inanimate objects will not. The insurance companies are immune to moral panic and make decisions based on facts.

When I saw the subject line, I wondered what Paul Clifford might have to do with your thread.

Also, i recall in the Star Trek NG episode "The Royale" when Picard starts reading the novel. He's reading aloud in front or Troi. He starts "It was a dark and stormy night..." Looks up and Troi and says "Not a very promising start."

Might want to ban pickup trucks, too. Who really needs pickup trucks when you can hire professional movers.

I think I've heard those suggestions, too.

And if your serious about your suggestions, make the police do them first with duty weapons and you just might get somewhere.

You are correct some cars are not approved for public streets, but al cars can be owned and used on private property (within state and local laws).

You'd be surprised what might happen in terms of acceptability. Of course the police will have nothing to do with biometric activated pistols, reduced magazine capacity, banning public carry when not on duty, safe storage, etc.
