General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe went to see The Big Short this afternoon: it's a MUST see movie
At the end I wanted to stand up and shout "Vote for Bernie".
It's based on a true story of several players who figured out what was going to happen in the housing market
bubble and determined that shorting would yield an amazing return: which it did.
But it also makes it very clear that the market was fraudulent and that playing the short meant making a bundle
off of people losing homes, jobs, everything.
Excellent performance from Christian Bale. Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, and Ryan Gosling turn in solid performances.
Expect unfavorable reviews from corporate owned newspapers...because this puts the lesson in economics, history,
and the morality of Wall Street up for discussion.

(2,931 posts)Is if it gives younger people with 401k's the idea that shorting is easy money.... its actually insanely risky.
edit: For anyone with HBO or access to an HBOgo account, see "Too Big to Fail". Amazing drama-documentary.

(31,395 posts)just how fraudulent the market was.

(2,931 posts)Can't wait to see it. As someone who recognized the fraud and played leveraged short positions through those years (not on their scale obviously, or I'd be on an island somewhere)... I am looking forward to it

A pivotal scene takes place during which Jeremy Irons and Kevin Spacey argue, in front of the management team, the merits of "screwing" the client. This video is that clip with the dialog removed...makes for some good watching and highlights just how good some of these folks are at their craft.
