Stephen Center CEO Del Bomberger in the cafeteria that is part of the centers Pettigrew Emergency Shelter, which opened last year. After 13½ years leading and expanding the homeless shelter, Bomberger is retiring today, one of the few days of the year when, he says, a palpable sense of peace settles over the facility.

At some point today, a 66-year-old man will slip out of the Stephen Center. And leave for good.
Del Bomberger will gather the last of his things, including Dorothea Langes famous Depression-era photograph of the migrant mother he kept on his desk. He will say a few final goodbyes. Then Del will make his exit, driving away from the South Omaha homeless shelter where he has been for 13?½ years.
Many of the 200-some residents who call Stephen Center home might not even notice. When I told a woman with a cane exiting her shelter apartment that Del was going, her response was a humbling, Who?!
The guy who built this place, I said.

(1,606 posts)a "miracle" befitting "merry Christmas." And merry Christmas to Cal Peg and all!
Can any of us imagine such comparable selfless commitment to the less fortunate by those who attend Trump rallies, tea party rallies, or cling to their guns, peculiar religion and Atlas Shrugged?
The moral dichotomy between the humane and inhumane in this country has become a chasm. Isn't it ironic how those who pretend to claim the high altar of righteousness are all too often so preoccupied with self that they lose grasp of the actual utility of their own self in the cause of improving the human condition?
Clearly, selfless actions of the individual when directed toward others can make the world a better place.
Ayn Rand is poison to the spirit of humanity.
Be kind. Do good.
Peace, all.
Thanks for posting, Steve.
