(29,674 posts)I wouldn't dream of traveling without my kid and I couldn't even leave the state without consent from her father so there was no reason to get a passport. Technically, I can't take her to the Ren Fest in Bonner Springs, KS without his consent.
In a couple of years she'll be of age and we won't have to worry about her father' tantrums over travel ever again.

(7,300 posts)Why on earth would you want to go to Kansas? Have you no shame? lol Just joshin' ya although I stand with Stormin' Norm Stuart in never spending any money in Kansas even when I visit my sister who lives in Wyandotte.
"I was 32-33 years old, I was just trying to win a damn ballgame, and I wasn't interested in who was getting the bids except for my tennis shoes: My tennis shoes were going to some damned place in Illinois. And I wanted a local guy to have that."
With a laugh, he added: "Now a game comes up, and I'm over at Kansas, and the reporter says, `I noticed you didn't stay in Lawrence, you stayed over in Kansas City.' Well, it popped in my mind what the Lieutenant Governor had told me, and so I said,`Why, hell no, I'm not staying in Lawrence. I'm not spending a damn dime over here. This is Missouri money.'
"You know, hell, it wasn't really true, but it was something you could play on. And if you guys really asked a good question, then I could avoid it."

Not actually true (Except for me not spending my money in KS) but it adds flavor to the "friendly" rivalry of Ks v Mo. When I was a bartender in KC, MO I refused requests to tune the bar t.v.'s to KU bb games by telling them "This is Missouri. Kansas is 6 blocks away. Drag your knuckles there."
The kid likes the Ren Fest. She does the whole steampunk thing.

There was a letter issued on Monday to the state and the state announced it today. Everyone is scurrying around because no one knows what will happen next.
I recently applied for a civilian job on base. After Jan 10 I can't get on base without a passport, even if called for an interview.
My child was accepted into a leadership seminar program. Two of the sessions will be held on base, in February and March. She has a state ID but according to this it won't be accepted. I can't get her a passport without her father's consent and he refuses. (We've been through this before when I wanted to find out about a school trip.) The only other way would be to go in front of a judge and it could take a while to set up a date for that. When school is back in session we'll find out whether she'll be able to participate or not.
We weren't granted an extension because the GOP supermajority legislature thumbed their noses at the Feds and actually passed a law that basically stated that they can't be forced to do anything that they don't want to do.

Radio Netherlands, VOA and a few others. From the age of 11, I never believed anything I heard at face value. I just juggled everything I heard and my a good guess as to what was going on. I worked after school at the local newspaper and learned that a rich person was never in the news for DWI or beating the wife or kids. I knew they were never arrested when they would run over people. I knew when election came about and the black precincts always voted for the white and never blacks and when 1500 would vote in their precinct and only 400 ballots were totaled. I saw very little different between us and soviet states. Rich people controlled everything and the poor people did not.

Consider getting a passport, we can goto Ireland someday.
Of course, I was trying to goto Liberty yesterday and did not make it. My car started on fire in Platte City.
It's like the curse of Christmas Eve for me.
One Christmas eve a postal worker went kinda berzerk and started yelling cuss words at me (not in the Post Office, I was volunteering at a Youth Center).
Another Christmas Eve some guy threatened to beat me up.
Another Christmas Eve, I was ringing bells for the Salvation Army and an ice storm hit. Froze the lock on my drivers side door and it broke while I was trying to open it. For the next two or three years (before that car died the final death) I climbed in the passenger door (or else jumped through the window like a Duke brother).
Maybe I could even add the Christmas when I walked downstairs and stepped in a pile of dog poop (or was it reindeer poop?) in my bare feet.
Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year. Happy birthday anyway.
And also, feathers or lead?

(29,674 posts)I haven't had a passport in almost 20 years. I wasn't traveling for a few years and then after the birth of my child I haven't had the chance to travel, even if I could afford it. In order to get a passport for my child I either need permission from my ex (her father) or I have to go in front of a judge and ask for permission, just to get the passport. As of this time it's been far too much hassle.
In 2 1/2 years my kid will be 18 and we will no longer need permission from her father or a judge. At that time we'll both get our passports together and plan a trip outside of the U.S. It's just easier that way.

(32,064 posts)Instead of what is being posted.
Do I need a passport for domestic air travel starting January 2016?
A: No. DHS is in the process of scheduling plans for implementing REAL ID enforcement at airports. DHS will ensure that the traveling public has ample notice (at least, 120 days) before any changes are made that might affect their travel planning.
Until enforcement at the airports begins, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will continue to accept state-issued drivers licenses and identification cards from all states, as well other forms of acceptable identification listed on the TSA website.
Can I use my drivers license to board an aircraft?
Yes. Until otherwise announced, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will continue to accept drivers licenses and state-issued identification cards from all jurisdictions.
DHS will ensure the public has ample advanced notice before identification requirements for boarding aircraft change. That notice will include information on the process for individuals with a non-compliant drivers license or identification card to be able to travel by aircraft.
What do I need to do if I am visiting a federal facility or a military base?
Starting October 10, 2015, visitors seeking access to military bases and almost all Federal facilities using their state-issued drivers licenses or identification cards must present proper identification issued by REAL ID compliant states or a state that has received an extension. When planning a visit to a Federal facility or military base, visitors should contact the facility to determine what identification will be accepted.
Every state that has applied for an extension has received it.
So you can fly or go on a military or federal facility.

(12,667 posts)You should renew your passport or get a passport ID as soon as possible, just because of idiots like this in government.
If you are applying for a job at the base, your renewed passport, an official picture ID (State, Student, Medical, or Employer that requires a background check) with a birth or naturalization certificate and SSI card, should be enough to get you to the point of being hired. Then you'll be able to use the Real ID as official federal identification no matter what the idiots in your state do. Part of setting your account up in RAPIDS/DEERs even as an employee or vendor, your bio-metrics are taken as part of the process and your profile is in effect, "locked in".
If you get called in for an interview, you will need to call and explain that since you have a Missouri Driver's license, you'll need a way to get on base for the day. They'll either need to put you on a visitor's list to get you a temporary pass with the Missouri ID and a birth certificate/Social Security card, or they'll need to get you an escort to go on and off the base.
Good luck with your job interview.

I will be taking a flight in January, but I do have a valid passport. In Minnesota's case, it appears the extension of the deadline might not happen. We are 'noncompliant'.
I terestingly, I know of a person, who in 2003, travelled into Mexico and returned, with absolutely no ID of any kind, just the word of the people who were also along. Before they went into Mexico, they went to the U.S. authorities, provided ID and SSI numbers and the SSI of the person without ID. The border patrol took them at their word and allowed the return without ID. Of course that wpuld mot happen today.

Here's some faqs on current Access:
http://www.dhs.gov/real-id-public-faqs
Rumor: I cant use my license to access a federal facility or nuclear power plant
Fact: Residents from a noncompliant state without extensions will need to show an alternative form of ID when visiting federal facilities, nuclear power plants and military bases. You can find more information about enforcement here and the most up-to-date information on compliance at http://www.dhs.gov/publication/isc-real-id-guide . If planning a visit to one of these facilities, you should contact the agency in charge to confirm what alternative forms of identification are accepted or what procedures the facility allows for persons without acceptable identification.
TSA:
passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.
Driver's licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
Permanent resident card
Border crossing card
DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
HSPD-12 PIV card
Foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
Transportation worker identification credential
Forgot Your ID?
In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete a form to include your name and current address, and may ask additional questions to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You may be subject to additional screening.
You will not be allowed to fly if your identity cannot be confirmed, you chose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.
TSA recommends you to arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time to allow ample time for security screening and boarding the aircraft.

(1,958 posts)I discovered about an hour ago that I have a valid passport, but no DL. I seemed to have missplaced my wallet. I am 99% sure it is in the house someplace. I went on-line and there has been no recent activity on the one credit and one debit card that I carry. I can get a new DL on Monday and they'll look up the photo on file to verify my identity and I suppose the credit union will accept a passport as ID to replace the debit card. This is a royal PITA. I have driven
myself nuts looking for it. How many times should I check jacket pockets?
The last time something like this happened was several months ago when I missplaced my cell phone. I could hardly even sleep, but a cell phone is easier to replace than a wallet. STATEMENT BY SECRETARY JEH C. JOHNSON ON THE FINAL PHASE OF REAL ID ACT IMPLEMENTATION
SharePrintDate: Friday January 08, 2016 | Source: Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
Release Date:
January 8, 2016
For Immediate Release
DHS Press Office
Contact: 202-282-8010
Today I announce the schedule for the final phase of implementation of the REAL ID Act. Bottom line up front: Effective January 22, 2018, air travelers with a drivers license or identification card issued by a state that does not meet the requirements of the REAL ID Act (unless that state has been granted an extension to comply with the Act) must present an alternative form of identification acceptable to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in order to board a commercial domestic flight. Over the next two years, those states that are not REAL ID compliant are strongly encouraged to meet the requirements of the law for the benefit of their residents.
