By most accounts, Roberta Jacobsons confirmation as U.S. ambassador to Mexico should have been a shoo-in.
Fluent in Spanish, expert in Latin American politics and skilled in cross-border trade negotiations, the career diplomat was nominated by President Obama to take over the crucial foreign service post six months ago.
After working on Latin American affairs for both Democratic and Republican administrations for three decades, Jacobson has broad bipartisan support in Congress.
Mexico expressed enthusiastic approval and prepared to welcome her to Mexico City. The Republican-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination and sent it to the full Senate.
But the nomination is in limbo, hostage to GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubios staunch opposition to Obama's diplomatic opening with Cuba, which Jacobson helped negotiate as assistant secretary of State.

(135,425 posts)Marco will soon feel the ire of millions of Mexican - Americans who won't take kindly to his leaving their ancestral homeland unrepresented by their most important trading partner due to his fit of pique.
What a short sighted asshole he is--does he seriously think he can play the "first Hispanic in the White House" card with this kind of stupid play? Hell, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans and Dominicans will vote AGAINST him .... just to make sure that a CUBAN isn't first!!!
Talk about dividing the ethnicities with this stupid call...Dumb, dumb Rubio!!!

(58,724 posts)The United States relationship with Mexico is among the most important in the world. Common interests and broad concerns range from extensive commercial ties, border security, narcotics and other crime syndicates, to family and cultural heritage. Its a relationship that merits the presence of a U.S. ambassador with extraordinary diplomatic skills, a result-oriented record of success, as well as direct access to the president of the United States. President Obamas nomination of Roberta Jacobson, currently serving as assistant secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, to become the U.S. ambassador to Mexico clearly does not meet this criteria.

The RW is mobilizing against her for some reason, not just Rubio.
