I love how the TV weather people are ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over the record high temps this week...

...without ever mentioning climate change. They're in awe and act as if this is totally unexpected and seem to be in wonder about how this is happening.

It reminds me of those shows like "Alaska: The Last Frontier", a show about an Alaskan family of homesteaders are constantly in awe about the climatic changes they are experiencing in living life in Alaska. Never mention climate change. Ever.

It's just incredible how they can stand there awestruck by the climatic changes without ever mentioning climate change as the possible cause.

They mention El Niño from time to time. They said this weather pattern happened in the late 1890's, so it's nothing new.

Chicago area. Don't know if it could have been snow otherwise, but if the whole 1 inch of rain is 6 inches of snow is close to accurate, we'd be buried right now. Over 3.5 inches of rain in December, as of yesterday.

Definitely not what I'd expect in Chicago in December!

We're at 13.5 for December as of yesterday (and it rained most of last night). It's rained every day so far this month. That's not in and of itself all that strange, but some days have seen really heavy rain, too. Rain here is more likely to be almost a heavy mist (that goes on for weeks); actual downpours are less common.

Yikes that's a lot of rain in 3 weeks. We had a REALLY wet July, but mostly because of two "10 year" storms where we got 5+ inches in one rainfall.

Should have seen the farm fields around here. They looked like the bayou.

It takes a lot to cause flooding here (given our normal rainfall, the city is set up pretty well for runoff)...but this month managed to do it! We had been having steady rain for days, so the ground was waterlogged...then got dumped on (don't remember how much).

5" in a single fall? Holy crap! It must have looked like rice paddies.

So, even though warmer temperatures are very common, it's also common to get the other extreme of cold temperature records and record snowfall at times. That's what people don't understand. It's not JUST warmer temperatures, but climate instability in general.

I am not a fan. I love winter. This is seriously not good for the plants and animals. My apple blossom tree is starting to bloom. The only one happy is my husband, as he's a dog walker, but even he is a bit grim about this. My chihuahua is also happy, as he doesn't do well in the cold.

This is very odd. However, I do remember winters growing up in NJ where it was much warmer than average and we had very little snow (if any).
