General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI love how the TV weather people are ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over the record high temps this week...
...without ever mentioning climate change. They're in awe and act as if this is totally unexpected and seem to be in wonder about how this is happening.
It reminds me of those shows like "Alaska: The Last Frontier", a show about an Alaskan family of homesteaders are constantly in awe about the climatic changes they are experiencing in living life in Alaska. Never mention climate change. Ever.
It's just incredible how they can stand there awestruck by the climatic changes without ever mentioning climate change as the possible cause.

(65,490 posts)weather in December. These temperatures are not a good thing, folks!

(14,449 posts)They mention El Niño from time to time. They said this weather pattern happened in the late 1890's, so it's nothing new.

(16,399 posts)I'd prefer cold, dry and no precipitation to warm for December and January and then 20 feet of snow.

(17,796 posts)we're excepting to be in the upper 60's on Christmas eve. Who knows, we might even hit 70.

(849 posts)In New Mexico we are having a typical El-Nino winter we have with every El-Nino in my 60 years living here.
I'm freezing my butt off watching the snow come down.
Enjoy the good weather while you get it.

(10,164 posts)As of yesterday, we set an all-time rainfall record for one month here (no small accomplishment: this is Portland). And only about 2/3rds of the month gone...

(65,227 posts)Chicago area. Don't know if it could have been snow otherwise, but if the whole 1 inch of rain is 6 inches of snow is close to accurate, we'd be buried right now. Over 3.5 inches of rain in December, as of yesterday.
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)Definitely not what I'd expect in Chicago in December!
We're at 13.5 for December as of yesterday (and it rained most of last night). It's rained every day so far this month. That's not in and of itself all that strange, but some days have seen really heavy rain, too. Rain here is more likely to be almost a heavy mist (that goes on for weeks); actual downpours are less common.
ProfessorGAC
(65,227 posts)Yikes that's a lot of rain in 3 weeks. We had a REALLY wet July, but mostly because of two "10 year" storms where we got 5+ inches in one rainfall.
Should have seen the farm fields around here. They looked like the bayou.

(10,164 posts)It takes a lot to cause flooding here (given our normal rainfall, the city is set up pretty well for runoff)...but this month managed to do it! We had been having steady rain for days, so the ground was waterlogged...then got dumped on (don't remember how much).
5" in a single fall? Holy crap! It must have looked like rice paddies.

(13,340 posts)30 degrees above normal. yes, the El Nino is the immediate cause. But all this heat from the El Nino came from somewhere...

(3,764 posts)I would guess it is stated policy from "the powers that be" to avoid mentioning climate change.
I love how they trot out the 30 year average and compare daily weather to it.

(50,313 posts)I have to admit I feel guilty for enjoying global warming so much. Last year at this time we'd already been buried in snow and had a several days power outage.

Are they cold temps in your forecast at all, say for the next 10 days?
Vinca
(50,313 posts)They downgraded Thursday to 67, but that's okay. I might go outside and start the spring yard work. LOL. No pesky mosquitoes . . . I hope.

the subject. Even though they are constantly pointing out high temps here and there.

(37,457 posts)So, even though warmer temperatures are very common, it's also common to get the other extreme of cold temperature records and record snowfall at times. That's what people don't understand. It's not JUST warmer temperatures, but climate instability in general.

(11,797 posts)I am not a fan. I love winter. This is seriously not good for the plants and animals. My apple blossom tree is starting to bloom. The only one happy is my husband, as he's a dog walker, but even he is a bit grim about this. My chihuahua is also happy, as he doesn't do well in the cold.
This is very odd. However, I do remember winters growing up in NJ where it was much warmer than average and we had very little snow (if any).
