Bill Nye Boo'd In Texas For Saying The Moon Reflects The Sun
Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.
As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.
But don't tell that to the good people of Waco ....

(15,031 posts)Billed as "the World's Foremost Authority," part of his schtick was to ask the audience for help resolving complex scientific quandaries.
One that I especially remember was his asking the audience, "Which do we need more: the Sun or the Moon?"
And the answer, of course, was the Moon, for during the day it is was very bright out doors and the Sun is truly unnecessary, but at night the Moon provides some of the only useful light in the night sky, so it's obvious it's needed more than the Sun.
I'm sure there's an audience in Waco that would agree with the good Professor.

They weren't a bunch of crazed "mad scientists."
Or corporate greedheads lighting cigars with $100 bills.

(37,748 posts)I take it in stride. Texas, like all geographic regions, has its share of buffoons and half-wits, along with its share of progressives and liberals... the difference between one region and another being merely in degrees.
What really, really mortifies me is our pronunciation of the name 'Montague' as 'Mon-tayg.'
