During the Republican presidential debate Tuesday night, Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina may have revealed classified information to millions of people watching CNN on live TV.
During a heated exchange in which Ted Cruz was defending a vote he made in favor of the USA Freedom Act, the Texas Tea Party Senator blew up at fellow Senator Marco Rubio, who accused him of voting for a bill that shut down the NSA's metadata program, "a valuable tool that we no longer have at our disposal," the Florida Senator accused.
Cruz then went off.
After accusing Rubio of making "knowingly false" and "Alinsky-like attacks like Barack Obama," Cruz retorted, defending the reason for his vote as "simple."
"What {Rubio} knows is that the old program covered 20 percent to 30 percent of phone numbers to search for terrorists," Cruz countered. "The new program covers nearly 100 percent. That gives us greater ability to stop acts of terrorism, and he knows that thats the case."

(845 posts)She's telling a tale about cooperating with the NSA. Whether true or not, it's a big difference between someone like Senator Cruz disclosing information from Intel Briefings.

(26,549 posts)It doesn't have to be an intel briefing to be classified.

(845 posts)The given quote and info provided didn't seem to indicate such.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Looks pretty straightforward.
Also, keep in mind that leaking is not declassification. Leaked information is still classified, and has to be treated as classified by people who learned about it while they had a clearance.
Action_Patrol
(845 posts)Having an agency just 'call and ask' for information and then you talking about it doesn't necessarily indicate that you are under any obligation to secrecy.
I understand what you are saying but having spent time in offices with classified material, the chain of custody and who can and can't talk about the info is well known.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)And specifically briefed HP on that classified program, probably to help spec the servers.
Which is why Fiorina should have known better than to reveal classified in an interview.

I don't know if crazy dad can bring him down, but I think Ted is so inherently unlikable, that he doesn't stand a chance in a general election. Who knows though, Nixon was pretty unlikable and his fellow republicans in Washington couldn't stand him. He got elected twice.

UPDATING: Intelligence Committee Chair To Investigate If Ted Cruz Released Classified Info In Debate
Did Senator Ted Cruz in a heated moment release classified intelligence during the GOP debate?
As The New Civil Rights Movement reported this morning, Senator Ted Cruz in a heated interaction with Senator Marco Rubio seemed to have revealed classified information during Tuesday's GOP debate on CNN. Sen. Rubio even offered a bit of a surprised and panicked admonishment upon hearing Cruz's comments.
Now, according to one report, the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Richard Burr (R-NC) will be investigating to determine if Cruz did.
Rubio, who is on the Intelligence Committee, interrupted his opponent after Cruz began speaking about the NSA's metadata programs.
"Let me be very careful when answering this," Rubio cautioned, "because I dont think national television in front of 15 million people is the place to discuss classified information. So let me just be very clear. There is nothing that we are allowed to do under this bill that we could not do before."

wouldn't it be great if Cruz was arrested and charged with releasing classified information? One less GOP candidate to worry about.

WASHINGTON, Dec 16 (Reuters) - The Senate Intelligence Committee said it is not investigating a possible breach of classified information during Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate, hours after the committee's chairman said he was looking into remarks by Senator Ted Cruz.
"The committee is not investigating anything said during last night's Republican presidential debate," Chairman Richard Burr and the committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein, said in a joint statement.

Senator Burr says the Intelligence Committee, of which Rubio is a member but Cruz is not, is looking into whether the numbers Cruz mentioned were classified.
"The question had been raised therefor I asked them to look at it and see if there was any validity to it," Burr told reporters, "Anytime you deal with numbers, and I think it dealt with numbers, the question is: Is that classified or not or is there an open source reference to it. So it's not as clear as just reading what he said. We've got to search all sorts of media outlets to see if anybody had reported the number independently."

(1,089 posts)Let's not forget that everyone, and I mean everyone hates Cruz's ass with the intensity of the surface 1,000 suns, regardless of party affiliation. Let's also remember that the 'establishment' of that messed up party doesn't want Rafael to get anywhere near the nomination. This could be the door that opens to take him down.
I do think you're right in that nothing will happen here, but I also think we should keep the background in mind. I don't see any other reason for Burr to announce what he did already today. Everyone hates his freaking guts and is terrified of what he'd do as POTUS.

The most damning information is that that the corporate world is cooking up for the rest of us. And they are better at hiding their ass(et)s than the government.
