(14,449 posts)However, in the big picture, it's better to send the kids home then have a bomb go off. Can you imagine the outrage? That superintendent would be vilified. I don't blame them for overreacting. The risk is too high.

(14,449 posts)I don't remember a time when the cops made that decision. Either it's really credible or the cops are getting to involved in decision making.

(7,234 posts)New York City officials said Tuesday morning they received the same threat that led to the closure of LAUSD schools but quickly concluded that it was a hoax, the Associated Press reported.
Mayor Bill de Blasio say that he was absolutely convinced there was no danger to schoolchildren in New York.
New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said he thought Los Angeles officials overreacted by deciding to close the nations second-largest school system.
He said a school superintendent received the threatening email Tuesday morning.
Bratton said the person who wrote the note claimed to be a jihadist but made errors that made it clear the person was a prankster.
Bratton said one indication that the email is a hoax is that Allah was not spelled with a capital A, the Associated Press reported.

I am watching the presser...
They are urging employers to let their employees with kids have the day off to watch them.
They are effectively paralyzing the second largest urban area in the nation.

(99,710 posts)The King David Hotel bombing was a terrorist[1] attack[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] carried out on Monday July 22, 1946 by the militant Zionist underground organization Irgun on the British administrative headquarters for Palestine, which was housed in the southern wing[9] of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem.[10][11][12] 91 people of various nationalities were killed and 46 were injured.[13]
The hotel was the site of the central offices of the British Mandatory authorities of Palestine, principally the Secretariat of the Government of Palestine and the Headquarters of the British Armed Forces in Palestine and Transjordan.[13][14] The attack initially had the approval of the Haganah (the principal Jewish paramilitary group in Palestine). It was conceived as a response to Operation Agatha (a series of widespread raids, including one on the Jewish Agency, conducted by the British authorities) and was the deadliest directed at the British during the Mandate era (19201948).[13][14]
Disguised as Arabs,[15] the Irgun planted a bomb in the basement of the main building of the hotel, whose southern wing housed the Mandate Secretariat and a few offices of the British military headquarters. The Irgun sent warnings by telephone, including one to the hotel's own switchboard, which the staff decided to ignore, but none directly to the British authorities.[14] A possible reason why the warning was ignored was that hoax bomb warnings were rife at the time.[14] From the fact that a bomb search had already been carried out, it appears that a hoax call or tip-off had been received at the hotel earlier that day.[13] Subsequent telephone calls from a concerned Palestine Post staff member and the police caused increasing alarm, and the hotel manager was notified. In the closing minutes before the explosion, he called an unknown British officer, but no evacuation was ordered.[14] The ensuing explosion caused the collapse of the western half of the southern wing of the hotel.[14] Some of the inflicted deaths and injuries occurred in the road outside the hotel and in adjacent buildings.[14] Controversy has arisen over the timing and adequacy of the warnings and the reasons why the hotel was not evacuated.[14]

(103,856 posts)What many people do not know is that out here, parents often commute LONG distances and may be hours from home..
I used to go 57 miles east every day, as my husband drove 65 miles northwest each way to work..
I got into it once with a school nurse who insisted that I pick up our son.. It was 2PM..school closed at 3, and I told her that with traffic, I could not even make it home until well after 4:30....
This was our "drama-queen" son who just wanted out of class. I'm sure that nurse wanted to nominate me for "worst Mom of the year", but when they refused to let him walk home or wait for his older brother (same school), I just told her she could sit with him until I got home (at 4:30) or choose another plan....She sent him back to class for the next hour and he was fine..

(68,918 posts)I grew up with a dad who frequently drove 2 hours to work and then 2 hours back. Here in Houston, most families aren't reunited until 7 p.m. or later because of traffic. I find it odd that people would think most people don't have a hell of a commute.
Both of my brothers live in LA and have fairly long commutes but no different than what we grew up with.
