I would like to thank the members of Discussionist for hosting us over the weekend.

Most of the time it was definitely different that the almost sanitary system we have here. But we survived and if we gave it a chance, a lot of us probably learned some things from people with a different thought process concerning politics and other topics. I personally enjoyed the visit myself.

No sane person would ever visit their troll hell-hole of hate. 98% (circa, as Fred Sanderss like to say) of Cave Dwellers post only in the "I HATE DU" forum. Their "Late Breaking News" forum still contains items about Don Knotts dying, and the Hindenburg disaster (>>Cave Dwellers, this is just mocking you for being stupid, I realize you don't actually have a Hindenburg post. However, I hear "The Ghost and Mister Chicken just came out on VHS!&quot

Cesspool. I'm sorry that DU every gave these assholes a larger forum. They post far more on DI than they do in their own cesspool.

I did, however, find it depressing to read the threads by people who still refuse to give Obama credit for the improving economy, deny global warming, defend trickle-down economics, etc.

It does seem to be a haven for people who have been banned at DU for one reason or another.

I am glad that DU is back and I thank the administrators for their work.

A good few "refugees" seem to have found the more-open conversations there enjoyable. Of course there's some utter crap...but the only difference in that regard between DI and DU is that the utter crap here isn't from conservatives. If I'm going to read bullshit, I prefer multiple flavors...it keeps thinks more interesting while wading through the noise to get to the good conversations.

I post about 50/50 between the two forums, and have since DI launched.

If that is possible. I can't stomach the place. They (Cave Dwellers) will claim it is because liberals can't handle dissenting opinions. But it is nothing of the sort. I don't have a problem with dissenting opinions. I thrive on them, they help me grow, they help educate me.

What I can't stand is the CONSTANT hatred. They mistake our disagreements with them as 'hatred', but these are some truly mean-spirited HATEFUL people. They will happily call out your mother and your little sister and condemn you to hell and then mock your cat and post pictures of your grandma, all while trying to say "Liberals are intolerant."

It truly is another world, not just in DI, but with the Cave Dwellers. Neanderthals. Although I think most Neanderthals had a better understanding of how a society works, and how to make life better for everyone by finding some sort of common ground.

I avoid a lot of them by seldom visiting the Politics forum (although to be fair, I trashed GD: P over here for the same reason: it's a hate-driven shitshow). The News and Culture forums are just as busy, and the trolling and flamewarring are much reduced.

Mon Dec 14, 2015, 06:14 PM

No one I've ever dealt with, outside of a Yahoo forum, uses the hate-filled terminology they do. These are not rational or sane people.

Example; A DU member says he/she is in trouble because of illness/job loss, etc. It shows up in the cave as a hate-filled screed showing personal addresses, jobs, but absolutely NOTHING to do with the original post. Just personal rip-downs trying to de-humanize the poster.

Somehow, being a hateful, ignorant Neanderthal is a virtue to these people. And by that I don't mean "the right." I'm not referring to normal, intelligent Republicans. I hang with some very nice people who don't share my views, but none of them have ever uttered words like the bile and the vitriol that comes out of the cave and DI.

I'm truly sorry Skinner, et al even allows the hell-hole to exist. All they're doing is subsidizing CD server costs. That is a primary reason why I will not contribute to DU anymore.

The government allows the KKK to have its shit rallys even though those fucks are likely on watch lists and half could be jailed for various reasons. The militia got similarly contained, let them do their thing for awhile and then round em up when they start thinking up stupid shit.

(and yeah, the largest terrorist cells are militia)

I initially alerted on the Dixie swastika avatars...then reconsidered my position (and it never did any good, anyway). I decided it's a useful way to flag racists and shit-stirrers. And, to my surprise, I've also had some good conversations with a couple of them. Good to the point of making me think I'll try and have a good discussion about that flag with a couple of them at some point. A couple don't seem like nitwits or racists, really...so I'd like to hear their rationale.

As an aside, a Facebook thread on this subject contained one of the best answers to the "it's part of Southern heritage" response. Tom Shear (yes, the guy from Assemblage 23, for industrial music fans...) said, "But why not use a symbol that doesn't have the awful connotations but still represents the best of the South? Hell, run up a napkin with BBQ sauce on it. I'd salute the shit outta that!"

I'm a fan of DI. I've never gone in with the expectation that people there will agree with me. I've had numerous very pleasant enounters there with both conservatives and liberals.

There are always some people stomping around making obnoxious comments but you don't have to engage with them.

To be honest, I've always found it a great deal less aggro-focussed than DU.
