(63,912 posts)early 20th century artist and the Ashcan School of social realism of that era here. So many social problems we face today. What I call the bloody crossroads of art and politics...
I don't know if it will be brilliant but I hope it will be good...
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)I look forward to your essay.
For anyone wondering, the Ashcan school was eight painters around the 1920's who worked in journalism and political cartooning, then forged a social realism style of observing and reporting around them. They often painted in poor neighborhoods around New York and Philadelphia. They include John Sloan, Robert Henri & Evertt Shinn. They had a monumental impact on the art world and continue influencing socially conscious artists.
Read CTyankee's essay, coming up soon on the new improved DU!

(63,912 posts)Shingles have sunk me to below my basement level emotionally. I have been essentially drained of my abilities to write and create.
But I will go forward and try and still write.
I am focusing on George Bellows because I feel his boxing series has some deeply moving resonance for our society today. More to come as i develops out of my senses...
the pain is out of my control, which I understand, so I try within my capabilities as they are, not was I wish they would be...thank you for your understanding...

(11,833 posts)Here's to a good recovery.
Looking forward to reading your essay on George Bellows, whenever it's ready.

(63,912 posts)if not, sorry for my mistake...was wondering because I wonder sometimes how much art is learned by kids in high school now, and maybe if they later take art history as an elective when they are freshmen or sophomore...
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)DU has some art teachers, can't remember who. I learned about George Bellows from a college art history class. Especially love the painting Stag Night at Sharkey's (1909). Later I heard this cool song by Laurie Anderson and William Burroughs. I think it refers poetically to the scene of the painting. It caused me to get more interested in Bellows and the Ash Can school.

(725 posts)Keeping the door buzzard thread open through the DU shutdown may or may not be a good option for me. Because I am already exhibiting symptoms of PTBD (POST TRAUMATIC BUZZARD DISORDER). Twice last week at 3:30 am I waked awide laughing with visions of buzzards ringing in my head.
The symptoms of PTBD are so fowl I just dont know how much more I can take.
I am somewhat intrigued by the mixed animal thread. I will try to get through that before its shut down, too.

Write. Write a lot. I'm behind on stuff I want to publish in time for Kindlemas.
Clean house and organize my craft stuff so it doesn't look like a bad episode of a hoarding show in here.
Finish repairing my son's work pants, so he was more things to wear getting all that overtime at The Font of All Evil (AKA, Wal Mart). This actually ties into the above task.
Read some books by people other than me.
Catch up on some shows I've been putting on the DVR (Code Black and Limitless).

(20,176 posts)There is other fine shit to do in this world.
- Read a book
- Drink espresso
- Drink wine
- People watch
- Go to the park
- cook nice dinners
- Have friends over for a game night
- Fuck
- Go to the movies
- Have a conversation with a stranger
- Visit your local bookstore
- Volunteer
- Undertake a craft project
- Call a friend you haven't spoken to in too long
- Many other things...
There is a great big world out there of things to do...some of which are even free. A lot of y'all spend way too much time here or elsewhere online or in front of the idiot box. Live. Dammit!

(115,677 posts)The main problem is the trunk is about 3 inches across so have to pad out the screws on the base. We had a table sized Norfolk which I have away at nearly 8 ft.
greatauntoftriplets
(175,747 posts)Until recently, my Norfolk was sitting on a table and about one inch from the ceiling. Now it's on a wheeled plant stand near the floor so it has room to grow again. Maybe it'll hit 8 feet one of these days. It was about 12 - 15 inches when I bought it some years ago.
