city they are from.
It's annoying.
You read threads about the weather and someone posts - Hey, it's 100 degrees here. I say where????
Someone posted a website where you can map murders in your area. People write that there were X numbers of murders. But....not mention where they are.
What's up with that? If I am Laura PourMeADrink and I say it's sunny in Boise - would I think - oh....shit...people are going to find me in Boise???
More examples I am not mentioning.
But...must be some high-powered closet Dems here, is all I can figure out.

(149,699 posts)Some folks have endured this. Yup, members here have been stalked by outsiders.
I know of one member who got permission from Skinner to change usernames so that the stalkers couldn't follow that person around.
It was intense.

(42,770 posts)details about location, workplace, real name?
i get it if you do that. But, if I wanted to stalk you...I would have to stalk how every many people in LA, SF, Santa Barbara, etc....
And, say you live in Podunk CA.....there's got to be a bunch of Peggys, right?

(11,093 posts)People are cautious about speaking up. On the bright side, people have an anonymous forum here for speaking up.
For a long time, I was reluctant as well; what was actually most worrisome was that if I had to apply for a job that my views might disqualify me.
In thinking about it, though, I've decided that if those views will disqualify me then I probably don't want to work in that environment anyway. However it might be subject just to the whims of an individual, so for self-preservation I just would not try to be too identifiable. I'm older now and don't care as much, and the stakes are too high to keep my mouth shut.

(41,861 posts)others in the past. I tell people, yeah, I live by Japantown in San Francisco, maybe even four blocks away, but I never say in what direction or give the address... but I have had people try to find me. I know this for a fact cause I have had a friend in a restaurant told me that some guy came in with a photo of me he got off Twitter, and wanted to know if she knew me. She lied and said no, and there are hundreds of Asians living in the neighborhood..how could she know everyone? The guy bought it and left, and she told me.. for a while I slept with my Tanto in my bed, but its not likely anyone would be coming to my front door. I kept it in my backpack just in case. But its been known to happen.. and while I like most people here, there are many I wouldn't trust with my address or phone number.

(41,861 posts)your account is forever, if you want it to be. You can't delete your account, and no I have a few years put in here, i don't want to start over. I live in what I consider a fairly safe city. I am in a good neighborhood, and surrounded by a lot of fellow Asians... I love this part of town, and I will likely never move. I know now, there are a few out there who hate me enough to take pot shots at me on the internet.. but I am not going to sweat it. Nor am I afraid to be here..or afraid to post. Just because someone has posted nasty stuff about me on another website doesn't mean it has to bother me. Their claims are worthless.. and it just shows everyone how much of a loser it takes, to post nasty crap about another person.

(20,586 posts)The S'Klallam tribe are probably the most awesome tribe in the country IMHO.
The are called The Strong People. This came about when the Salish tribes (including BC tribes) held a celebration with competitions. For one, the strongest men in the tribe were to lift a log and place it on the longhouse. All failed to lift it until it was the S'Klallam's turn. The S'Klallam men rolled the log into the water until it was shoulder high to them, then carried it out on their shoulders to the longhouse. From then on they were called The Strong People but I think they should be called The Smart People.
Anyway - a story to tell your travel companions as you pass through.

(146,329 posts)It's a false fear, though. I and other DUers don't mind putting where we live in our profiles. I've yet to have anyone from DU try to find out who I am or bother me. It's easy to discover who I am, too.
The funny thing is that most people are far less anonymous than they think they are on places like DU.

(38,326 posts)If my OCD kicks in while polishing my words it can take me hours to write a simple letter-to-the-editor.
I've got basically three writing modes:
Quick and blunt, "professional" (requiring no parental advisories for "explicit" language), and polite-and-publish.
I think my polite and publish mode writing is ugly until it's been tweaked buy an editor I trust.
My writing could be rated like video games:
https://www.esrb.org/ratings/ratings_guide.aspx
My political discussions with strangers often require I start at the Early Childhood rating level, otherwise I hurt peoples' feelings.
I'm not so bad as my grandma, however, who could say things so vile as to render a sailor in a whorehouse impotent for the rest of his shore leave.

If I have your zip code, sex, and date of birth, in most cases your identity can be narrowed down to less than five people.

(23,156 posts)Please give us a hint. If you actually hail from such a small town that you'd be that easy to find, then simply say, "It's hotter than blazes here in central Oklahoma."
I often mention that I'm in Santa Fe, NM, because it can be relevant to what I'm posting.
Sheila is my actual first name, but there are a surprising number of Sheilas here, so I wouldn't be that easy to find. And I've never been stalked, lucky me. If I thought I was in some sort of danger from evil people were looking for me because of my DU presence, I'd take on a new screen name, and perhaps say I live in Albuquerque. Heck, some years back, during DU2 I think, there was a moratorium on being able to change our screen names and (I think) keep post counts, or at least your date of start. I did actually change my screen name once, around that time, and for the first several weeks, so I wouldn't be taken as a rank newcomer, I signed, "SheilaT, who used to be XXX."

(3,714 posts)I can't really summarize in a sentence or two, but if you're a foreigner getting paid in just about any foreign currency, you're likely not doing too bad. If you're a local getting paid in the local currency, you're getting screwed. And if you're a pensioner, it's even worse. Two years ago, the typical pension would cover about 48% of your food costs, leaving you 52% for other things. Now, that same pension would cover food needs for only 27-28 days a month, with nothing left over for utilities, medicine, healthcare, etc. My wife's father would like to remain out on his own, but may likely end up with us, especially if the winter gets brutal, since he won't have the means to maintain a separate household. My wife and I both predicted this would end up this way, but who would listen? The prediction is that things will get better next year, but the government has been guilty from the beginning of overestimating and under delivering, and there's no sign that will change any time soon.
